ee EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D.C. THE EVENING WASHINGTON WEDNESDAY... October CROSBY 8. NOYES. ing Star has a regular, permanent fide daily circulation more than bon: treble that of any other daily paper pub- shed in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added together. return rejected tribators who wish to possess their useripts, if unused, should keep a copy. sa No attention paid to Anonymous Let- _ ters. Mr. Powderly’s annual address to the Knights of Labor 1s a thoughtful paper, full of sugges- tions, both general and specitic, whieh it will be worth the while of every member of the order to consider. Une paracraph, given to the eight hour movement, is of especial interest alike to workingmen and employers. Mr. Powderly denies that he is opposed, as has been charged, to the reduction of the hours of labor to eight. But he frankly declares himself a foe toany such rash and premature assault upon the ex- isting order of things as that made on the Ist of May. He believes it possible to devise a plan whereby the desired change can be brought about gradually, without the disturbance of the peaceful relations of employer and employed or the demoralization of business. The loss of vast sums of money by both classes last spring OPENED AN INDEFINITE NUMBER OF FALL OVERCOATS. THEY ARE VERY STYLISH AND PERFECT EVERY WAY. THREE-FIFTY 18 THE LOWEST PRICE. THIRTY-FIVE DOLLARS Is THE HIGHEST COST. WE THINK THEM MUCH BETTER THAN THE AVERAGE TAILOR MADE TO ORDER ONES, A $75 ONE MAY BE BETTER, BUT WHO WISHES TO INVE>T A SMALL FORTUNE IN AN OVERCOAT? DO you You Don’T? THEN COME To US. SAKS € COMPANY, CLOTHIERS, HATTERS, TAILORS AND FURNISHERS. ET AND MARKET SPACE. it 7TH STRI through the paralysis of the building trade he deplores as not only evil in itself, but a neeuless evil; and in this he is clearly right. Moreover, ti ‘case serves as an excellent illustration of the motto of the Knights, that “an injury toone 4s the coucern of all.” Stagnation in the mar- ketot building contracts cuts down the demand, and theretore lowers wages in every trade which contributes to the construction or furnishing of abouse, and indireetly reduces the incomes of butehers, grocers, clothiers and other dealers in domestic necessaries. When people have Jess money to spend, all the chanuels through Which money flows must be less flush. As the grocer, the butcher, the clothier, the nail-naker, the glass-blower and the brick-burner had noth- ing tosay about the strikes of the carpenters and masons, it did not seem just to make them suffer a part of the unhappy results thereof. What Mr. Powderly says about the admission ‘of persons of immature Judgment to full mem- bership of the order, and permitting undiscip- Lined novices to stir up the passions of their associates on occasions when there Is the utmost need ofcaim and deliberate action, is straight to the point. He would have done bet- ter still if he had gone beyond the line of con- demnation at which he stopped, and urged the prompt expulsion of members who persistenuly ignore the principles they have sworn to sup- port. It is here that the relations of the Knights Yo the public come into plain view. One bad Knight, allowed to retain his full membership in spite of conspicuous ill-doing, is looked upon as a representative of the whole order, and the order is condemned for his sake; whereas the readiness of the order to suspend him or throw him out when he abuses his privileges would convince the public that its professions can safely be taken at thelr face valu ——— One faction of the opposition to Henry George in New York city has recovered trom its fright sufficiently to make a couple of nominations. ‘This is the “committee of one hundred;” and its candidates are Orlando B. Potter for mayor and Theodore Roosevelt tor president of the board of aldermen. Mr. Potter is an ex-Rep- resentative in Congress from New York. He is | democrat of the Tammany school, and one of the leaders in the bolt of 1879 which ran John Kelly for governor. He was also the owner of the World buliding which was burned a half dosen years ago, and whose unsate condition, Drought to lignt by the fire marshal’s investiga- tion, was the subject of much public scandal. He is prominent as a business man, and claims the honor of first devising the national bank system. ‘Mr. Roosevelt's career has been brief, but Boteworthy. Though only twenty-eight years old, he has already served two terms asa repub- Hean in the New York state legislature, and made somereputation asarelormer. He Isalso the author of a small historical text-book which te used in several institutions of learning. These nominations are significant, as Mr. Potter represent the heavy mercantile and Jand-holding interests of the city, while str. ‘Roosevelt represents the Knickerbocker aris. toeracy, with their wealth and leisure. The one being @ democrat and the other a repubil- can, it is evidently expected to draw votes from both parties by the combination. And yet there are democrats who will refuse to vote for Mr. Potter because he once bolted the regular ticket, and republicans who will be suspicious of Mr. Roosevelt because in 1884 he imitated the example of hig favorite candidate for Presi- dent, Mr. Edmunds, and kept his hands foldea ‘While bis feliow partisans were at work. The nomination of J. Edward Simmons by the“committee of fifteen” will probably amount to nothing, unless some large organization, like ‘Tammany Hall, endorses it. Mr. Simmons be- Jongs to the class of perennial candidates. ——-———— Oneof the most marvellousof artificial whirl. winds has struck the New York Stock Ex. change, carrying listed securities of all kinds to @ height which few of them were ever ex. Pected to attain. Old observers pronounce Yesterday's dealings almost unprecedented in the history of American spectlation. The Stock which has been the leader in the autuma rise is New York and New England common. It was so little dealt in outside of the eastern and middle states until last winter that its quotations are not generally sent out by tele. graph; yet since spring it has more than doubled in price. The cause of its present buoyancy is unkuown except to the ellque who are engineering the movement on the floor of the exchange. Official deuials of all tiv: favorable reports on which the stock has been boomed have been published, yet the price has steadily continued to go up; andthe only hy- pothesis lett is that the enemies of avertain operator wio has been muking liberal short sales have resolved to give bim a shaking up. ‘The effect of the advance in New England common {is shown in a responsive upward movement along the line generally, und con servative dealers are urzing caution upon their customers; nevertheless, it is worthy of | note that several of the speculative stocks which figured in last years spurt have not yet regained the figures then made. Western Union bas not, at the present writing, although it has been pretty close to high water mark within a week or two. Texas Pacifle has nob got within five points of it, or Pacific Mail withe inten. When the top has been reached, and a ull, with its natural recession, follows, ‘it will be iu order for the big operators to take up | these and other “specialties” and see what they | can de with them. ——__—» --—___ If Representative Lawier has come all the way from Chicago to inquire how the Interna) | Revenue bureau is going to collect the tax on oleomargarine, be bas made a tong journey to | A: ittle purpose. He might have stald at home and tried to sell alittle bogus butter. He would then bave found out by the most sauisiactory experimental process just how the government burposes to get its dues. There are few conun- drums of the sort Mr. Lawler proposes to ask whieh a shrewd bureau chief cannot answer if ‘he puts his wits to work. a ‘The daily record of delayed trains on the Metrepolttan road is a sort of “to be con- Unued™ story.
