THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D.C.. TUESDAY, ad TS tag : AEs THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON TUESDAY... .. .Detober 5, 1886. CROSRY 8. NOYES... ing Star has a regular, permanent reulation more than \y paper pub- shed Im Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added together. ‘The Star cannot undertake to preserve or returo rejected communications. Con- tribators Wish to possess their man- useripte, if unused, should keep = copy. > No attention paid to Anonymous Let- A good study In human nature fs afforded by the mayoraity contest in New York eity. At the first mention of Henry George's name the old parties sent up a shout or derision. When it became evident that the proposal was made im earnest, this was changed to a cry of dis aay. Now that Mr. George and his friends, instead of blowing up the city ball with gun- powder and pulling down the spires ot city churebes, as such wild-eyed revolutionisis were expected to do, have set quietly to work to carry the election by the pacific instrumen- tality of the ballot-box, the party men have plucked up courage, and are beginuing to say that there is nothing to fear. Tammany Hall professes to be sure of electing its candidate, the County democracy is equally certain of success, and the republicans declare that the next mayor is destined to be of their complex- ion. The managers of the George canvass make no boasts; but they Know thut all three of their adversaries canuot win the fight, and they be- lieve that they have as good a chance as any one of them, Meanwhile, it is rather remarka- bie that the workingmen do not seem tobe deserting their candidate for either of the others; whereas clergymen, lawyers, doctors and other citizens of scholastic training, be- sides merchants who read and think, are re nouneing for the nonce their old affiliations and coming out for Mr. George. They ado not array themselves as a party with a plation they merely propose to support the candidat at the head of the labor ticket on grounds of individual merit. It ts worthy of note that the vast majority of citizens who are terror-rtrick at the idea of electing a mayor of Mr. George's peculiar views are persons who have never taken the trouble to find out for themselves ‘what those views actually are. —<$<—-—__ ‘Two newspapers, eager to get their prophetic machinery in running order, sent reporters re- spectively to the republican and democratic state conventions of Massachusetts to inter- view the delegates and ascertain their preter- ences for presidential candidates in 1888. Of two hundred and twenty-seven republicans, one hundred and sixty-vight—considerably more than two-thirds—favored Mr. Blaine. Ot three hundred democrats, two hundred and twenty —nearly three-fourths—tavored Mr. Cleveland. Massachusetts is only one state among thirty- eight, it is true, but the figures here given are significant. Taken in connection with the fact that the democratic convention nominated for governor a mugwumr of only two years’ stand- ing, and the republican convention a man of the thick-and-thin partisan record of Mr. Ames, they indicate that the mugwumps are out to stay and that the dominant party in the Bay state has done its nouse-cleaning and settled down to business in earnest. If the signs in other parts sf the country correspond with these and hold good for eighteen months longer, ‘we shail probably see the battle of 1884 re- peated with the same combatants and on the same field. Let us hope, for the good name of American politics, that it will not be also with the same tactics on either side. $$$ Although the destruction of property can never be an unmixed blessing, there are occa- sions whefi the compensatory benefits more than balance the ills. Such is the case with the reeent accident to the aqueduct under the Georgetown bridge. This casualty attracted public attention, brought about an official in- ‘vestigation ending in the condemnation of the bridge as unfit for use, and doubtiess did a good deal toward hastening the transfer of the prop- erty to the federal government for the public advantage. If there had been no breaeh in the aqueduct, the bridge might have remained ‘open to traffic 3 month or two longer, getting further and further out of line, and finally breaking with a lot of men and women and horses on it; while the government, prevented by the long delay trom acquiring title within the period specified in the free bridge act of last June, would have been forced to the alternative of building a new bridge at a point less conve- nient to the majority of persons called to make ‘use of it, $< ‘The new one-dollar silver certificates are go ing off “like hot cakes.” The Treasury printing presses cannot work fast enough to supply the demand, a large share of which comes from the very banks which have fought the cart-wheel doliar with all their might and main. Ina little while the country will be back again, as far as its retail trade is concerned, upon a paper Dasis, but without the old schedule of paper prices. Everybody will hail the change with delignt. A paper currency, properly supported by cuin of the precious metals, is the most con- venient and agreeable medium of exchange the world bas ever seen. There was something more than mere sentiment tn the popula: at- tachment to the greenback of the war era, = Through @ behind-time mail express train from the west this morning, the local train on the Metropolitan road was aguin delayed nearly half an hour, bringing its passengers into the city too late toenable the clerks In the up- town departments to reach thelr offices within the time limit Unless the B. and 0. can speedily remedy these delays, the government employés wiil be obliged to abandon thelr homes on the Metropolitan road; which will be a serious loss to the revenues of the company. A well-managed omnibus line ap the Metropoil- tan road would receive a paying support. ——_—__— Why ts it that drovers are now permitted to biock up Peansyivania avenue and other prom- Ament streets with herds of unruly eattle to the Public danger and inconvenience? Should any Serious accident to person or property happen through this evil, would not the District author- Atles be Hable for pecuniary damages?
