tl THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON - 7 —— D.C. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25, 1886. THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON shed in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added together. _ MF. Blaine, in bis opening speech in the Maine campaign, pats forth one of those start- ling economiesyliogisms which Lave made him, in the esteem of his party followers, a prince of logician, and caused his enemies to condemn him as a chief of sophists. In 1861, says he, after nearly a generation of free trade, the peo- ple of the nine leading manufacturing states had accumulated In their savings banks one hundred and sixty million dollars; whereas in 1886, after nearly a quarter-century of war tariff, the same people had one thousand and twenty million doliars to their credit in those institutions. The people of Maine alone have more than twenty times as much money on de- posit in their savings banks to-day as they had 1a 1861. Theretore, concludes Mr. Blaine, the war tariff should be maintained. This Is a kind of logic which is convenient, rather than conclusive. Modifications of it could be made tosult all demands. If the savings bank de- posits had decreased instead of increased, it would bave been possible to show that the American people, under free trade, became sluggish of temper, and were willing to let others handle their money for them; whereas, under high protection, they were putting their money dirvetly into channels of productive in- dustry, to the detriment of their petty bank accounts. Or, to take another example, there are undoubtedly, in 1886 millions more of peo- ple in New England and the middle states who ‘drink lager beer than there were in 1861. Has this change been wroaght by the war tariff? And is Mr. Blaine willing to use the comparison Tar Waste Seasox. ‘Mistakes are made in every walk of life, even in the Clothing business, some clothiers to the contrary not- withstanding, We are but humen, not infallible; therefore have we erred. The mistake to which, in this instance, we plead “guilty as indicted by our- selves,” consists in our having bought among our ‘spring stock, several lines of Boyy and Children’s Suits rather too heavy for midggmmer wear. As a Tesnit, they are still here. They are just the weights however, which economical and tarseeing mothers usually buy for thetr boys at this time of year for occa- sional wear now and for general use during the an- tumn months, when the weather will be too cool for Very light-weight clothing and not cold enough for winter garb. We have applied the keen and cutting edge of the Knife of reduction to these now desirable goods as freely and effectually ae we have to the lightest and sauziest of summer welghis, So that mothers who ‘are interested in having their boys well and season- ably dressed at little cost (and what mother is not) have now an opportunity rarely presented to them of replenishing thelr boys’ and children’awardrobes with Just the Kinds, styles and weights of goods they want, at prices that will surprise and please those who know thelr actual value. We do not quote prices here, as figures on paper and prices marked on TEE Goops ‘usually mean two different things Come and seo us. Wesubmit them without argument, You shall be ag an argument before the citizens of the great- est probibition state in the union? —<—<—<—<——___ Tothe oft repeated inquiries “do detectives detect?” and “do directors direct?” must soon be added a third—“what are experts good for ‘The expert accountant whoexamined the books ‘of the Boston company of which the defaulter Gray was treasurer says in effect that he knew there was a deficiency In that officer's cash, butdidn’t think it was his duty to report the fact to his employers, and feared that it he did ‘so he would lose his position through Gray's influence! This may be taken for what it ts worth; but nothing has appeared in the case to excuse the criminal neglect of the directors of the company. They knew exactly what Gray's salary was, and It was patent to them, asit was too everybody in the neighborhood, that Gray was ostentatiously spending each year av least four or tive times the amount of his in- come. This circumstance of itself should have put them on thelr guard, and caused them to closely Investigate his accounts years ago, when the amount of his embezzlements was comparatively small. The fact that they did not do so makes them morally tf not legally re- sponsible to the stockholders for the whole amount of his thefts. Se —— Representative Scott of Pennsylvania seems Very loth to aecept a renomination, but, as the democrats of the Erle district have learned from sad experience that he is about the only amember of their local party organization who has any hope of winning a Congresstonal ‘Aght, it is nataral that they should insist upon his yielding his preferences to theirs. Doubtless Mr. Scott would have liked a late convention better than aneariy one. If bis impatient co- partisans could have waited till it was finally determined who should succeed Secretary Manning at the head of the Treasury depart- ment, they might have had less troubie in angling for a candidate. a ‘There is one branch of constructive industry which would be benefitted Just now by an ob- stinate warfare against “scabs.” That is the Dailding of party platforms for the fall cam- paign. A workman who does not knowa rot- ten plank when he sees it, or is willing to use one which be does know, ought to be driven ‘out of association with decent. men; and the re- fusal of party to dismiss him trom its service would certainly justify a strike against it at the ——— ‘Editor Cutting’s address to the people of the ‘United States, declaring that the question of Mexico's extraterritorial jurisdiction is not settled by his release from imprisonment, is ‘thrilling to the last degree. The people of the United States expect him to go back at once and settle it, and will try meanwhile to prepare ‘themselves for the worst that may befall him on ‘iserrand. ——- = __ “There could not, in my judgment,” says ex- Secretary Blaine, “be a more deplorable event than a War between the United States and any other republic of Awerica.” This shows that many of Mr. Blaine’s admirers must have mis- taken the meaning of his course in the Peru- ‘Vian imbrog!® of 1881. a ‘The democrats of Pennsylvania must expect tocut into the colored vote in that state pretty largely this year. Black is their nominee for governor, and a Mr. Africa is candidate for ‘another office on the state ticket.
