Mr. Moxley treated the Washington news- boys to a ride on the “roller coaster,” at Athletic park, yesterday. The ladies of the Newsboys’ Ald society were in charge of the boys. Over four hundred little fellows joined in the sport, and as the cars went rushing down the track, wild cheers expressed their delight. It took fourteen seconds for the car to get around the track. About five seconds was enough time to Mill the car again. A long line of boys eagerly awaited their turn, and the car kept spinning, While the band played and the boys laughed and shouted. A public meeting was eld in the Academy Cumberland, last evening in the inter- Baltimore and Obio Canal company. J.W. Shuck, mayor of Cumberland, acted as chairman. He stated that its object was the selection of delegates to the Syracuse canal con- Yention, the ultimate end being to get the aid ©f the ‘national government in making the canal a free institution. J. W. Thomas, George J, Wellington, Colonel Baughman and William Brace made ‘addresses. One of the speakers suggested that if the state would release to the canal its mortgage for $3,000,006, which she now considers practically worthless, an_addi- | tonal mortgage of $1,000,000 on the coupons | 0f the eaual could be placed, whieh would make the whole debt on the canal a million and a haif. August 13th, The din and commotion consequent upon “moving in” day of camp meeting had about subsided, when the tabernacle bell pealed cheerily out calling the tenters forth to the opening vesper service of the camp meeting at quarter before eight last evening. Father Laney came into camp early in the afternoon, and will see that that bell does its duty Promptly during the coming fortnight. An un- usually large band ot worshipers gathered under the tabernacle at this service. A choir of about thirty-tive voices, led by Prof. Henry Wilson, was on the stand, with Mr, Dyer as organist. Dr.Peyton Brown announced the openiny hymn, after the singing of which Dr. McK. Riley took his text for the evening's from the fourth chapter of Nebemiah. He spoke earnestly and pointedly toa deeply at- tentive audience. AN UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE.— About midnight last night Georgiana Batson, a young colored womau, was arrested on two charges of assault and battery, and was locked up at the police station. Shortly afterwards Station Keeper Boss discovered the prisoner hanging to the top grating of a cell door by a portion ot her skirt fastened around her neck. She was cut down and again tried to commit suicide, but was unsuccessful. Georgiana was taken to the Police Court this morning, where she pleadea guilty to a charge ot profanity, and was fined $5. THE NEW TRAFFIC AGREEMENT FOR 999 YEARS THE TERMINALS ON STATEN ISLAND, Ata meeting in Philadelphia Wednesday of the Jersey Central rafiroad company the Joint traffic contract between that road and the Baltimore and Ohio was formally ‘approved. ‘The new agreement recognizes the one already existing between the B. and 0. and the Reading road, and under its provisions the Jersey Cen- tral, Reading and B. & O. lines will be operated as one road. The Central agrees to interpose no ‘objections to the construction of the bridge over the Arthur Kill to Staten Isiand, where the Baltimore and Ohio's terminals are to be located. The B. and 0. also had the right to do all the business—passenger, express and treightover the Staten Island line.
