There is to be found in every community, ong every class, a superserviceable few so smart In their own conceit, that to appear wiser than their fellows they adopt the rule to believe nothing that is said, and agree with no one in ‘Qnything they do. Among the thousand things which they deprecate in business it is a special fashion, where their ignorance is most conspi- cuous, to criticise adversely all advertised arti- cies. They “spread themselves” on these as thelr « torte.” The compass of their wisdom is this: that because an article is exten- sivel; ivertised it must necessarily bea fraud; for, as uey say, it it was nota fraud the pro- Prietors could’ not afford tospend such enor- mous sums in making their wares known to the pubiie, The absurdity of such a pretense Prltbe bost illustrated by @ conversation which .¢ writer had a few days ago, with a member Of a large concern, in which this very question Was discussed, “Why,” said the atleman, “take our own case, for’ instance: We are spending two bup- dred and flity thousand dollars ‘@yearin ing our goods betore the trade and public. is it reasonable to suppose that we earn ee this amount of mouey, or risk It, in advertisi: &® worthless article, without merit of any kim when by the mere outlay of $1,000, or less, wé conid buy the best reach jon or formula? No, sir, you can depend upon It, there is not an ar: ticle on the market to-day which bas stood the test of years and is in general use that haso’t an undisputed value and intrinsic virtue. Ad- Vertising serves to introduce and make known such an article, and supersedes theemploy ment fa how: of expensive ‘agenis and. ceuvansery which # business not vertised employs, an‘ which is another way of spending money for this purpose. But ‘advertising docs the work most eflectively and prompuy, “My long experience and observation,” he continued, as been that a person trying an article that bas no merit, upon the strength of nowsbaper, advertising, ‘and talking against such an article, can do more harm than col- umn of advertising in Its favor. On the con- trary, a good opinion expressed in like manner, from ‘oue to another,on an article that has merit, Is the best form of advertising, Hence, au advertised article inust bave merit to begin with, and upon the strength of its virtues news paper advertising ean subdue prejudice and atd in forming good opinions, which, repeated in manitold Ways, spreads the popularity and etfects the sule Of & good article. “In the past tour months we Have received over 3,000 unsolicited testimonials unquall- fiedly endorsing the merits ot our specialty, Duity’s pure mait whiskey, all of whieh are on fle among the most valuable records ‘ot our house and open to the inspection of any one interested—and out of this entire number fully 2,600 of the writers state that they were in- duced to take it upon the recommendation of friends who had also tried it, and only 500 who had taken it on the strength of the newspaper notices alone.
