POWPERLY. The Home Club Not Opposing Him— How Strikes and Boycotts will be Regulated Hereafter—Not = Candi- dai Anything. General Master Workman Powderly in an interview at Philadelphia yesterday said, re- garding the Home Club, which, it has been re- Ported, was antagonizing him—“I am told by men who claim to belong to it that the idea with which it was started was to purchase land and erect homes for aged members of the or- ganization and at the same time toestablish a school in which the principles of the Knights of Labor and the broader principles governing labor in general were to be discussed. It Is claimed that the ‘Home Club’ was opposed to me some time ago. I don’t know whether it was or not, But I am assured that it is not now.” Passing to other matters, Mr. Powderly said: “There will be no more boycotts, The name ill never more be used in our orders. ‘There is 10 necessity for the boycott, The very ends that would “be reached through the medium of the boveottean ve attained by the standing of two men face to face and talking ® matter out and explaining their differences without mak- ing fools of themselves, That is the whole thing in a few words. But boycotting has always been done, and is still going on in principle, "I have evidences now of eight or fen boycotts Which are now in, progress against workmen who are being blacklisted. Boycotts are being placed every day by employers ot labor, NO MORE ILI-CONSIDERED BOYCOTTS OR STRIKES, “To use the boycott for every trifling thing that turns up now no longer rests with the local assemblies, but the general executive board has the power, if necessary, to order a boycott whenever ‘just cuuse ‘arises. ‘No strike,’ aecording to our new rules, ‘when over twenty-five persons are obliged to quit work on account of it, shall be entered upon or sanc- | tioned by any local, district or state assembly sti | When aid, financial’ or otherwise, may be re- quired from outside such assembly, until the general executive board shail have been repre- sented by one or more of its members or as- sistants in an effort tosettle the pending dim- culty by arbitration, and then only by order of he general executive board. Mr. Powderly denied that there was any lack of harmony at the recent Cleveland convention, | “The waruiest feeling exists between the entire | board and myseli. From the first day that we met together until the present time we havi been a unit on everything that has passed be- tore us. We have never passed upon a meas- ure except as a unit, and, no mutier what is said to the contrary, we will continue to be so while we are on the board.” THE TROUBLE WITH TRADES UNIONS. Mr. Powderly then discussed the present at- | titude of the knights toward open trades unions. “We never have had any trouble with trades unions,” said he, “and trades unions have never had any trouble with us, except one trade union, and that is the Cigar Makers’ I ternational.’ We would have no trouble with the Cigar Makers’ International Union except | for our cigar label. We have had lots of men | come to us for the sake of the label. I call such men knights for revenue only.” ~ NOT A CANDIDATE FOR ANY OFFICE. When asked if he expected to be a candidate | for reelection as general master workman at the Richmond convention in October, Mr. | Powderly said that was a subject he never talked on. He said there was nocut and dried business about these eleetions, and every di ale was expected to nominate the man of hi noice. Mr. Powderly said he had no political | convention at all; he was not a candidate for any office. “f regard the position I now hold val to that of Congressman, governor or any uther position, and iar above any position with whieh my naine h n connected. ‘The | general master workmanship of the Knights of Labor is @ greater and more responsible posi- | ion tham that of the President of the United States.” ——— Sun Spots and the Weather. From the New York Tribune. Three tornadoes and several thunder storms | were reported from Dakota and the adjacent Friday night, almost simultaneously structive lightning and torrents of rain ers, France. It is a coincidence of no account, perhaps, that at the same time three | earthquakes were felt in the latter district and | aslight disturbance of terra firma on the New | Jersey shore, although Proctor says that storms | and ‘earthauakes irequently come together. | But there was another coincidence worth men- Uoning im connection with the weather phe- | nomena just mentioned. Within forty-eight | hours of their occurrence, and preceding them, | asun spotcame into view on the edge of the | solar orb, by the revolution of that body, and another and larger one broke out on the side of the sun turned toward us. It may be added that the destructive storm at Kansas City, the cloudbarsis at Xenia and St. Louis, several tornadoes in Indiana and Ohio, the hurricane | which mowed down a forest of oaks in the sub- | urbs of Madrid, Spain, another which devas- | tated the vineyards of Montpelier, Franee, ex- | traordinary gales in Germany, and the tornado | Hitch swept over Lonato, Lombardy, between | May 11 and 14, were also preceded,'at an in- | terval of from a tew hours to two days, by the | appearance of large and particularly active sun spots. | _ ‘The notion that some relation exists between sun spots and terrestial disturbances, espe- cially of the weather, is an old one, and has been pretty generally discredited by ‘scientists Whose opinions the ¢lvilized world is bound to | respect. “Nethertheless, during the last twelve | or fiiteen years it has been diseussed quite earnestly by men of reputation and eminence | in astronomy and meteorology, and, though a long way from being establisied, hus certainly | gainea somewhat in acceptacce, The imper- | fect manner in which observailons of solar storms have been conducted, the undue haste of enthusiasts in interpreting the phenomeva actually observed, the apparent conflicts in the evidence actually secured, the intricacy | aud novelty of some of the problems which it raises, and other circumstances have com- bined’ to prevent @ final determination of the truth or falsity of the theory as yet. But continued attention to the pos- sibility in question has led a num | ber, inen independently of ech other, tonotice striking coincidences between solar and terres tial dista: bonces, similar to those just men- | Uoned. Dozens ot tornadoes, scores of thunder and hail storms and several cloud. bursts, tor instance, have occured in the United States and Europe within the last three months, in- side of two or three days after the appearance ef violent commotion In the sun's gaseous ene velope; and the ihree greatest storms and cold waves’ of last winter in this country followed ciose upon similar solar phenomena. These few facts are quite Inadequate to prove any theory, but iey euailenge consideration and justiy Fespectitl treaiment of the “sunspot cranks” unl the matier has been most closely studied, | Habits. HOW THEY ARE FORMED, From the Buffalo (N. ¥.) Times. The three greatest habits, or, In fact, we might say the only real habits against which the hu- man system orsense of taste is unable tocombat are those of tobacco, whiskey and opium. A pecu- liar coincidence about these three drugs, and one which has not been generally observed, is that each and every one of them contains some polsonous element, In tobacco we find nicotine, in whiskey fustl ofl, and opium is @ potson in Itcelf, same as strychnine and arsenic, and when taken in overdoses proves fatal. Now, itis not possible that to these three active poisons is due entirely the habits referred to, by which the system becomes impregnated with them and us causes an uncunquerable craving, which can only be overcome by a long medical treat- ment, the principal object of which Is to eradi- cate these poisons? This is the treatment in all institutions devoted to the cure of habits of this kind, and it isa divided question among learned. writers as to what is the direct cause in the formation of these habits, But why should there be division of opinion? It, as they all agree, it is only neces- sary to eradicaie the poison from the system in order to cure these habits, is it not a logical con- clusion that the poison itself is the cause of the habits? Who ever heard ot « person having an unconquerable craving for such stimulants as cider, beer, ale, coffee and tea, and yet every one adlmité that any one of these Is niore palat- able and pleasant to the taste on first trial thai tobacco, whiskey or opium. —Althot object of writing this is uot to advertise Dutty's pure malt whiskey, and while perhaps it has never occurred to’ its proprietors to make a specialty of their product for this purpose, it seems to us In possessing an article of the kind which they claim and which they evidently have, free trom fusil oll (the causative prin- ciple}, they have actually solved the liquor hubit. Certainly, it eaunot be the alcohol in whiskey that causes the craving, for it this were the case, in persons drinking several glasses of cider, which coutain about the same Percentage of alcohol as an ordinary drink of whiskey, they would be just as likely to fail into the’habit of drinking efder—a thing un- heard ot. n h the ‘You mave a rerrecr RIGHT, when you demand a Ben-on's Capcin druggist to expect to receive one.
