SCENES OUTSIDE THE MANSION. The Part the Public Took in the Wed- ding—Incidents About the White House. Outside the mansion, from as early as six o'clock until the lights were turned out at ten, there were many scenes of interest, Though the wedding was intended to be quiet and pri- vate the people seemed determined to wituess all that could be seen and so flocked in great numbers to the neighborhood of the White House. They began betore six o'elock to take Position in and about the grounds of the Ex- ecutive mansion. The first visible evidence of Uhe approaching ceremony was the arrival of some of the musicians of the Marine band, gorgeous in their red untiorms. The members of the band came straggling along in such a man- ner that their number appeared much greater than it actually was. Some of the spectators: declared thatutleast one hundred and filty men in red coats, with horus and trombones, Went into the munsion, and this gave rise toa report that the newspaper reporters had gone in disguised, like Nunxi-Poo, as second troni bones, The’ seats in Latayelte square com- inanding a view of the White House portico Were pre-empted early in the evening by ladies, THE SURROUNDINGS. ‘It was a lovely June evening, and asthe sun ‘was going down the view in front of the Ezecu- lve Mansion was strikingly beautiful even in acity Ifke Washington, where the eye is sated with picturesque effects of park and leafy Vistas, The grasyes wore their richest emerald hues, and the trees nodding to the listless breeze seemed to have dunued their brightest green, While the falling waters of the fountains, ‘of which glimpses could be caught through the foliage, flusued back Wwe slanting rays of the sun, and sparkled like myriuds ol zems. The meiliow hgbt soiteued the colors and outlines Oi the buildings beyoud the park and blended all into # Must agreeable picture. Such u sceue, fitting for a nuptial our, the members of the wedding purty might have bebeld if they had lovked Out to the north, but so far us the bser- vauion of outsiders weut, Lone of them looked outunless they stole a nasty glimpse now und then throug the window draperies. In tue private partof the mansion, ou tbe west side of the portico, the gatue: si ‘crowds outside could discern no signs ot life. The blinds were drawn or the windows weil protected irom out side seruuny by heavy curtains, On the cust, or more public side, In one of the lower win: dows, the members of the Marine band, or us many us could crowd to the window, appeared. Ahey seemed wo take greater interest 10 waidle ing the crowd outside than in the ioveliness of the prospect. Occasionaily one of the attaches of the house appeared ut an upper window, sur- veyed the crowd below a moment, and ‘then disappeared. Police Captain Vernon and Lieu- tenant Guy with esmali squad of officers touk up positiou of thé portico, ‘Luv Presiuent’s coach aman, in ail the dignity oi bis oilve-green ilvery with'a high hat aud bul gloves, uiso officiated on the portico, THE CROWD OF SPECTATORS. Soon the wedding march Was finished, and the crowd outside stood in perfect silence while the ceremony was being performed inside. When the band struck up again a Joyous wedding chorus, the spectators seemed Ww ve relieved and began to iwugh and joke about the collation, which was conceaied trom view by tighUy-drawn curtains, THE NIGHT SCENE. As it grew dark the brilliantly illuminated mansion made a handsome spectacle, Light streamed from nearly every window. In the grounds in the rear the lamps along the car- Tiage way were lit. The band, which was sia tioned in the vestibule, played at frequent in- tervals during the evening, and afforded very pleasant entertainment for the outsiders, sev- eral hundred of whom remained until the last musician had gone home. The interest of the spectators kept alive by the delightful mystery as to where the Pres ident wouid take his bride and wien they would leave. The greater part of the crowd re- mained, in fact, an hour ufter the President had gone, and did not then know that the President and his bride had lett the mansion, The guests began to leave the house a few minutes aiter Due, and before ten o'ck all of them had taken their departure. DODGING THE REPORTERS. An interesting feature of the outside scenes was contributed by the newspaper correspon- dents, who resorted to various stratagems to prevent the President getting out of his house with his bride wituout their knowing it, Cabs aud vehicles of various descriptions were pressed {nw service by the news-huuters aud their twinkling lights could be seen duncing in the darkness at different points around the grounds. It was very generally understood that tie President would go to Deer Park, but at what hour bo one was informed. The gates to the grounds south of the mansion were locked and guarded. Every possibie way of egress from the grounds was, however, picketed by the newspaper guard. About nine o'clock those on watch espled a carriage moving silently and siowly through the shadows 1u the srouuds to Lhe south front of tue house. Ina sew minutes the carriage door slammed and then the wheels could be heard grindiug over the roudway as the carriage Was driven rapidly away. Over a thousana people visited the White House this morning in Lopes of being admitted to view the floral decorations of the parlors. ‘The majority were ladies, and they were very persistent in their attempts to secure admis- sion, They claimed that the announcement had been made that the public would be given an opportunity of viewing the scen di ever, imperative, appointment, aud many bung around the portica in the vain hope that t in excluded, because a force o1 workmen were set to work early tils morning in dismantling the rooms of iheir floral decorations, and betore noon everything bad been removed. ‘The large butted plants were returned to the propagutlug gardens and. the eut flowers dintFivuted ‘among the Vatlous city hos: tropical and othe were piials by direction of Col, J.
