A REPORT OF ITS OPERATIONS BY THE OF- FICIALS IN CHARGE. C. Herschel Koy, in charge of the manual training room at the High school, has sent to Commissioner Webb, who has given much per- sonal attention to the subject, a report upon the work accomplished during the seven weeks ince March 30th, when the training rooms went into operation. The report, which is con- curred in by Principal Paul, of the High school, say: We have endeavored to impart (1) a knowl- edge of the proper construction of tools, (2) fa- miliarity with their use and care, and, as faras possible, (3) skill in manipulation, The class consists of sixty boys, nearly all of whom have attained creditable knowledge aud skill in the use of the hamimer, the saw, the brace and bit, and the various kinds of planes, and have ha some instruction in the pnerpeitog of tools, the use of the cinwular saw and the lacing and ar- rangement of machine belts. In addition to practice upon rough lumber, they have, up to fate, constructed a half dozen modeling boards for the drawing room, some simple stands for the eae laboratory, and a dozen well-planed and jointed boxes, with a supporting frame, tor the botanical growing room. Within the next three weeks they Wwillstuay the chisel, hatchet, the mortise and tenon, the dove-tail and other joints, and wood trimming. Our’ numbers being limited by thesize of the room, the equipment of tools and the amount of tine I have been personally able to devote to it, we have been obliged to choose but twelve boys from the third year class and forty-eight from the second year, the basis of final selce- tion baving been the deportment record. The result of addpting this method has been to give 8 high tone to “the shop,” and it would be dilli- cult to find a room, even in this school,in which better discipline prevails. There has been no lack of interest, but great enthusiasm, aud we are continuously beset with requests to be per- mitted to enter the class. ‘was adopted for government use, GOVERNMENT TESTS.
