LAYING THE CORNER STONE. Jefferson Davis Makes Another Speech. JUSTIFYING THE SOUTH AND INCIDENTALLY PRAISING GEN. GRANT. A great throng witnessed the laying of the corner stone of the confederate monument by Jefferson Davis, at Montgomery, Ala., yester- day. The weather was five. The foundation ofthe monument Is thirty-five fect square. The corner stone bore in raised letters the inserip- tion, “Corner stone laid by ex-Prestdent Jeffer- son Davis, April 29, 1886.” In the procession ‘Mr. Davis was in a carriage drawn by four white horses, each led by a negro in livery. The next carriage contained Gen. and Mrs, Gordon, hhis daughter and Mrs. Clement C. Clay, and was surrounded by survivors of the 6th Ala- bama and other confederate veterans. The pro- cession Was preceded by a cavairy and artillery escort, and was farther made up of other local milttary, the uniformed rank Knights of Py- thias, grand commanders of Knights Templar and Masonic bodies. Ex-Gov. Watts opened the exercises at the monument by requesting Rev. Mr. Andrews to pray. The ex-governor, who was attorney gen eral ‘in the confederate cabinet. then intro- juced Mr. Davis ina brief speech. ‘The scene as Mr. Davis arose and grasped the hand of his old attorney general was very affecting. It was gome moments before be could proceed. Mr. Davis opened with an allusion to the tormer relations between them, and said: “Thus it was When we met the other might, after years. of separation. Some people in the rooin gave a sardonic smile to see two old weather-beaten Men embrace; but our hearts were young, though our heads ‘vere old. Gordon and also to Lee, and incidentally, in alluding to the surrender of Lee to Grant, applauded the latter tor bis manly conduct at that time. “It may be proper to state,” continued Mr. Davis, “that we have no desire to teed the fires of sectional hate, while we do not seek to avoid whatever Fesponsibility attaches to the belief in the Hebteousness of our cause and the virtue of those who risked their lives to defend it. He coutinued: “The successful party always hoid the defeated responsible for the war, but when — shall bave subsided and reason shall ve resumed her dominion it must be decided ‘that the general government had no constitu- power to coerce # state, and that a state hhad the right to repel invasion.” Mr. Davis urged the people of Alabama to perform all their duties as citizens, now that the state had Yesumed her place in the Union, and concluded Ry catogtxing the women of the south. ‘he corner-stone was then laid with Masonic honors, after which Mr. Davis and Gen. Gordon received the veterans in the governor's room 4m the capitol. After dinner they joined the Ladies’ Military Memorial association in a cession to the cemetery, where the soldiers’ graves were decorated. ‘The Indiguation Meeting at Albany. The call for the mass meeting held at Albany, N. We invite them to t nay —— the glorification of disloyal and men, the revival of sentiments re- Sey to those who fought tor the Union, ab- yt to the loyal north, and ae to the subjugated south.” ‘The call was signed by Gen. A. Barnum. Speaker Husted, of the assembly, was made chairman of the meetin; im the evening. In his speech Gen. Huste: said, as Albany was one of the first cities to send troops to the front, “so it is the first to de- mounce @ renewal of the principles on which cae dteoe Senwe fought in 1861, Jefferson Davis lared war.
