TUESDAYS. APRIL 27, 1886—SUPPLEMENT. NTIC CO-OPERATION. of John Jarrett and Andrew Carnegie for Benefiting Working- men. ‘From the Pittsbrg Dispatch. John Jarrett, ex-president of the Amalga- mated association, and Andrew Carnegie, the iron and steel manufacturer, are interested in @ big scheme for the benefit of the working elasses of this country. The scheme originated with Mr. Jarrett, and he has been assured of the assistance of Mr. Carnegie. It is not likely, however, that anything will be done until fall. ‘The project is co-operation on an unusually lange seale. It is proposed to establish distri- bution, productive and credit systems ex clusively in the interest of members of organ- ized labor. When the plans are completed, which will be in the fall, a large general store and a workingman’s savings bank will be es- tablished in this city. Mr. Jarrett has been working on the scheme for several months. Letters explaining its ob- Jects were written to different assemblies of the Knights of Labor and other labor organiza- ous In. the leading cities of the United States. Favorable answers have been received to these communications, and much interest Is being taken m the movement. The full details of the enterprise could not be learned, as Mr. Jarrett could not be seen last evening’ Several men who propose taking stock explained the scheme as follows: “No one but workingmen or members of labor organizations will be permitted to take stock, and no man ean hold more than $200 worth. Ifa man desires to go into the company and has not the amount of money required, he ean deposit a portion of bis earning in ‘the bank. On these deposits he will receive eight percent interest. Bunkers say that money is going # begging at tive per cent, and I cannot Understand how they can afford to pay more than that amount. Of course Mr. Jarrett and Mr. Carnegie would not go into a thing of this kind blindly, and believe they will be able to Keep their part of the agreement. When a suf cient fund has been secured to start the bank and store they will be established in this city. Acentral and convenient location will be se- cured, Everything that is used by a working- dan and his family will be kept in the store. Prices will be lower thun at other stores, but there will be a profit tur the stockholders, and dividends will ‘be paid every six months or de- ited to the credit of the stockholders In the Anumber of delivery wagons will be sent ali over the cities daily for the purpose of receiving and delivering orders. These stores Wilt be ‘established in ull the leading cities of the country as soon us possible. After this scheme has been tested, building aud loan usso- ¢lations will Le organized, the main object be- Ang lo erect homes ior the members, “In time there will spring out of this move- ment co-operative rolling mills, steel mills, foundries, lactories and machine shops. Work: ingmen will soon become interested tu the Movement, and instead of spending money in saloons or ior pleasure, will deposit all they can spare in their baak.’ With men like Andrew Carnegie and Jobn Jarrett vebind the scheme ‘Were is hardly any possibility of a failure.” Some time ago this paper published a rumor to the effect that Andrew Curnegie intended to ‘arn over the Edgar Thomson Steel Works to his employes, making it co-operative estab- shment. ‘The rumor was denied, but the men ‘Were assured that their employer intended to go something tor their benetit, but it was not khown until lately that he was associated with Mr, Jarrett ia a buge co-operative enterprise. x Hickey’s remark to the men some ume ago that “there’s a better time coming” is now explained. Her Skull Was Fractured. ANVESTIGATING THE MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF A YOUNG GIRL IN MANCHESTER, ¥. Annie Donouue, sixteen years old, who was Supposed tohave died irom intemperance, at the Monument house, at Manchester, New Hampshire, on April 6, was really foully dealt with. After the city physician, coroner and another physician, who investigated the case, decided that death had been caused by alcoholism, Dr. Woods made a visit tothe room. He found a vial containing liquid and this, with other circumstances, led him to believe ‘that the girl bad been murdered. Several physicians were about to make an autopsy, when Dr. Hoyt and the parents of the girl objected, and the body was buried in St. loseph’s cemetery. Rev. E.C. Crane, of the ‘West Manchester Congregational church, took the matter up and succeeded in getting a number of prominent citizens interested. Itwas Fumored that a wealthy citizen was in the oom with the girl Saturday night, "The mayor called the aldermen together and by a unaul mous vote ordered the coroner to make an autopsy. ‘The remains were disinterred last Saturday morning. The autopsy showed tliat the inner piate of the skull had been fractured, and also that oneot the arteries had been severed, causing hemorrhage aud compression ohods Prals, producing death. There was ‘no race of alco! ad in the body. An inquest ‘Will be held. ay Swrrs Srscrre Is nature's own remedy, made from roots gathered from the forests of Georgia, The method by which it fs made was obtained bya halfbreed from the Creek Indians who mhabited a certain portion ot Georgia, which was communicated to one ofthe early settlers, and thus the formula has been handed down to the present day. Dickinson (Dak.) Letter to Newburyport Herald. To illustrate what manner of men we need I Will relate an incident which is to the point. I presume you are all acquainted, through the newspapers, with the Hon. Theodore Roosevelt, who is quite prominent in New York politics and society. He owns a ranch on the Little Missouri, about 80 miles northwest from here, @ndcreaied quite a stir last Sunday by bring? Ag to town three horse thieves whom he had captured with the helpot two of his “cow men.” him I heard the following story; About the middie of last month these roughs ‘who had been operating in his vicinity stole @ umber of saddles and placing them on board his boat made off with their booty, thinking themselves secure from pursuit, as they were in ‘the only boat on the river. Mr. Roosevelt built another bout, and taking two of his men_ fol- lowed the outlaws 100 miles, came upon them in camp on the river's bank, covered them with his rifles, disarmed them, brought them 150 Mniles across the country to Dickinson, and turned them over to the sheriff. On the jour- Bey thetr food gave out, and Mr. Roosevelt was obliged to dispatch one of his men to the nearest “cow camp” for supplies and send the Other out hunting while he pressed on alone with his prisouers, and for four ‘days he subsisted on bread made of . nothin; bat flour, and water so muddy that the brea. was brown. When I saw bim Mr. Roosevelt had been on the “trail” for three weeks, and wore a cowboy’s hat, corduroy jacket, flannel shirt, and heavy shoes, but was in excelleut health and spirits. Suid he, “I don’t know how I look, but I feel first rate!’ The next morning he ap- d im the justice's court, saw the outlaws Indicted, and a little later took the train, bound West, for his “cow camp.” [bad never seen Mr. velt before, aithough I had read many ar eles from bis pen; and when I ieft home Phad no idea of meeting a gentleman ot his standing on the frontier masquerading in the character ofan knpromptu suerifl. But only sueh men, men of courage and energy, can hope to suc- ceed in this new, beautiful, but undeveloped country. ANEW JERSEY HUSBAND GIVES UP PURSUIT OF HIS RUNAWAY WIFE AND HER LOVER.
