i ad Wes apa THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C.. AMAN AND HIS WIFE ON TRIAL FOR THE MUR DER OF A THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL. A telegram from Seranton, Pa., April 21, says: ‘The trial of John McAndrews and his wife on the charge of murder, In having caused the death ofa thirteen-year-old girl, Mary Ganghan, Who had been intrusted to them some time ago, is now progressing, and has resulted in some thrilling revelations of cruelty and in- humanity practiced by the prisoners upon their hapless little ward. The testimony of Mary Ganghan’s brother Frank, a bright child 11 years of age, created a sensation, and filled any eyes with tears. The boy said that for about a month after he and his sister were adopted by McAndrews they were treated very well. Then iis sister began to be abused by the entire family. She was sent long distances in her bare feet in frosty weather for water and coal. After a while she Was not permitted to occupy @ bed, but was made to sleep on the floor on a bed made of meal bags, with no covering over her. This bed ashe occupied until the day she died. Her ehiet ‘elothing was a thin calico dress. Her diet con- sisted entirely of mush, which she made her- self, and was compelled to eat from a pail on the’ floor with her fingers. At no time since Yast iall was she permitted to wear shoes or Blockings. ‘On the Saturday evening before she died Mc- Andrews heated a poker until it was red and Fubbed it upon her teeth, saying that it her host returned to this world after her death he would be able to identify her. On Sunday he asked her where she would like to be buried, ‘and she replied with her tather. Frank last saw his sister at 5 o'clock on the morning of her death. She was lying on the floor, and had no ‘Dedelothing over her.’ She asked him to litt her head upon a pillow and to place the family di Upon her feet to Keep them warm. The chil- dren of the house maltreated her, and one day ata bit in her mouth and chased her around house. Frank complained of this treat ment to McAndrews, but the latter replied that they might kill her forall be cared. The Sunday before se died McAndrews removed Mary's ¢lothing, put her in atab of water, and then Deat her’ with a horsewhip. ‘This terrible story was corroborated by the neighbors, and Coroner Dean, who examined the body of Mary Ganghan immediately after der death, testified that she died of starvation and neglect.
