THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D.C __THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON SATURDAY. CROSBY S. For half @ century the Washington Light Infantry has by its unsullied, soidierly career well earned the title given toa Boston military organization of “the Ancient and Honorable;” to which, In view of the perfection of drill and organization steadily maintained by the corps, should be added thatof “the modern and ad- In keeping with the public spirit always snowa by the Infantry it has raised a magnificent building comprising a spacious armory, and a theater that in size and beauty fitness for its purposes will compare favor- abty with the best in the country. The erection of this building on a plan of such grand propor- tions and with satistactory thoroughness of con- struétion, has naturally cost a good deal of money. The Infantry have provided fully for the larger part of this expenditure, but is still bordened with a floating debt of some $30,000. Tociear this up the corps is about to hold a grand military fair and bazar, and it will be Seen from the substantial list of contributions to the object printed elsewhere in THE STAR that the people of Washington are coming for- ward in the proper spirit to the aid of the sol- Gier boys. He does not pretend that it is a per- fect device. Its operation Is subject to mis- chance and even failure through the bad faith Of one of the contestants or one of the judges; but that is no more of an argument against the principle than the deflection of the needle fs an ‘argument against the existence of a pole. The great point gained, after all, is the encouraze- | Ment of a conciliatory rather than a hostile spirit between the disputants. Half the con- troversies which vex mankind are the result, not of deliberate attempts at deceit or oppres- sion, but of misunderstanding; and the vest Way, surely, to clear up a misunderstanding 13 to give each party to it a chance to set forth his side in cool blood, and have tt calmly consid- ered by the other party and by somebody who 4s not selfishly Interested in the success of either. The harmful effects of strikes and boy- cots are by no means confined to the loss of money occasioned by the stoppage of business; Dut the relations of men who should be frien and work in harmony are strained past the Point whence they can ever come together again with quite the same feeling as before ‘The best time to heal a wound is when it fs first Inilicted—not after it has become a festering sore. Ex-Governor Long’s speech in the House in Debulf of the arbitration bill made a strong Point of the expense to which a workingman Would be subjected fn trying to settle a difter- ence with arich and powerful corpe m by any of the legal processes now in existence. This infuses a particularly satirical flavor into ‘the letter of Receiver Sheldon to Martin Irons, 4n which, speaking of the workman Hall, whose discharge gave rise to the whole tronble in the southwest, he says: “One of his friends informs me that he has concluded to appeal to the court for redress. It is the proper arbiter in such cases, and will do exact and speedy justice to- Ward all. It is the mode of arbitration provided by law, and the practice of appealing thereto is not without precedent.” The spectacle of a man who earns two dollars a day retaining Our Untanndered Dress and Night Shirts are made by one 01 est and Dest manufac turers in this ies the sale of ntry, Who col his products in this’ éity to us.
