About four o'clock Saturday afternoon John Chapman, a colored boy fourteen years old, was seen to run from the residence of Mr. William Chedal, 614 New Jersey avenue, and fall down the front stairs, being closely followed by Solo- mon Minster, a twelve-year old white boy, who Jumped down the steps and prevented Chap- man from falling all the way down the steps. Several citizens who saw the affair went to- wards the colored boy while Minster went for a physician, When the citizens arrived at the steps they found the colored boy dead, and blood oozing from a wound in the left breast, near hisheart. In the house they found Wille Chedal, 11 years old, who was too frightened to tell what the trouble was or how the colored boy was killed. The dead body of Chapman wis removed to the police station by Lieut Kelly and Officer Oliver. Wiille Chedal was afterwards brought to the station by his father, An examination of the body of the ‘lead boy showed that a bullet had passed through Chap- man’s heart, THE INQUEST. Coroner Patterson held an inquest at the seventh precinct station yesterday morning. Solomon Minster testifled that Willie came over to his house after him to go to his (Wil- le) house and play while his mother was out shopping. The witness’ mother consented, and he wentover. While in the house Willie called him to look’ ata pistol,but he declined and said he was going honie if the pistol was not put away. Witness went back and looked at the pistol. Chapman, who is employed at the house as a servant, then came in, and Willie, who phb, come up upstairs, called: Hi stairs,” at do you want?” inquired John “Never mind,” said Willie, “come up here. John started’ upstairs, and Willie, who was Standing on the landing above, pointed the pis- tol through the banisters and it went off, John ran outand fell down the steps, but witness Jumped over him and prevented his failing further. Witness then went after Dr. Merriam, Who was not at home. Willie Chedal, who did the shooting, testified Chapman, Minster and himself were mind- e house while his mother went shopping, he went up stairs to get some papers to |. While up stairs he found a pistol whieh he did not know was loaded. ie said he called John up stairs and pointed. the pistol at him, when it went oi! Hesaid that Chapman was employed ai his house, THE VERDICT. The jury returned a verdict “that John Chap- man came to his death from a pistol-shot wound | of the chest accidentally inflicted with a pistol held in the hands of Wm. M. Chedal. Several days ago Mr. J. Blake Kendall, the hardware dealer at 618 Pennsylvania avenue, reported to McDevitt’s detective agency that his store was being robbed. The robberies were committed late at night, after the store was closed and all the employes had left. The amounts taken ried from three to tenor twelve dollars at a time. Saturday night Messrs. McDevitt: and Finder captured the supposed offender, in_ the person of Charles H. Cornwell, who had previonsiy been em loyed in the store as bookkeeper. He was taken In custody by Officer Lightboun, who took him to the seventh precinct station, where he was locked up. When searched $2.68 in mon revolverand duplicate keys to Kendall's store were taken from him, It was shortly aiter dark when the store was closed and adim light was left burning.
