THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. * FEBRUARY 22, 1886. THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON February 22, 1886. ‘The revolving year has once more brought a holiday that has secure hold on the Amertean people, though its observance ts not marked by any well-defined rnles, Possibly in time the day may take on a more settled character, but whether it does or not it Is safe to assume that ‘Washington's Birthday will be honored so long as the country endures. It fs fitting on this day torefresh our knowledge of Washington's Iife and services, for we cannot do so without an in- creased attachment to our national institu: tions. And, happt!y, we can at the same time find instruction by the contempiation of a lofty personal character. It was his character tow- ering over his achievments which inspired By- ron to pay him the celebrated tribute with ‘which the poet closes bis immortal ode on Na- poleon: “Where may the wearied eys repose ‘When gazing on the fr Where neitiver juiity glory gtows, ‘Not despicable state Yes, one, the first, the last, the Dest, The Cincinnatas of the West, ‘Whom envy dared not hate hed the name of W.shington, Te inake man blush there was but one!” Probably nothing that Gen. Sherman can say or write will seriously !mpair his military repu- tation or the affection with which most people regard him, but he is putting his fame to a severe test by his incontinent talking. Had he taken bis eue from the silent Grant he would stand much better to-day. His hasty and Peevish utterances are twisted into construc- tions whieh are as injurious to himself as to others. There tx nothing very alarming, for instance, in a letter written by Sherman to | Halleck in 1362, and published in Saturday's New York Sun,in which the writer suggests that the General who should control the Valley of the Mississippi at the end of the war would be the man of destiny. But the remark might be so construed as to make Sherman out to be @ traitor of the deepest dye. Sherman's fling at Dana is not at all commendable, and it al- lows the attacked editor to toss back the familiar eritici«m that although the hero of the Mareh to the Sen is a very famous general, he never won an important battle. ‘The project of bringing the various nations of the American continent into closer commercial and political reintions has much to commend {t toserious consideration; and now that it bas been revived by Senator Frye, ina vill provid- ing for a congress of American nations at Washington in October, it would not be strange if the sugges af this couferes which the political integrity of its members | Would be guaranied, the extension of trade Felations and acommon silver coinage. It ts | obvious that these are timely and important toples, and {t could do no harm, certainly, for | the nations of the con toxether | im a friendty conference Feach an understanding —— ae ‘The Enclish, it seems, are getting a Vittle frightened as weil as we over the possibilities of the pension list. It is said that there are there $00,000 persons who have some claim to. pen- sions from service in governmentemploy. In this country we have no civil pension list, and it is of very great importanee that none be started. ——— In the see-saw of popularity as Jake Sharp goes down Roseoe Conkling comes up. The lat- ter’s friends are now talking of making the pre- sent investigation a starting point for another effort to restore him to political leadership and to the United States Senate. —$—_$<——<e—___ Wilmington, North Carolina, is the latest American city to go up in an expensive bl of glory. Being the metropolis of the tar-heel | state, naturally it burnt well. Pitch and tur pentine are rather risky neighbors. It is thought that the loss amounts to a million dol- Jars, and hundreds ot people are made home- Jeas and destitute. $$ Chairman Bland got only two members of his committee, Messrs. Lanham and Bynum, tosign bis report in favor of tree coinage. If the committee ratio holds zood in the House, the scheme wil! be severely let alone. $< << Kenward Philp gaived a temporary notoriety six years ago as the reputed author of the “Morey letter,” which at one time bade fair to play the part of “rum, Romanism and rebellion” with Garfield’s chances. Subsequently it was clearly established that he was not the author Of the letter, but ft was worth $5,000 to him all the same In the shape of dam: Au Tuar Scresce Axp Sku Could do to make Benson's Capcine Plasters the best porous plasters, and also the best general external remedy tm the worid, has beon done.
