Carroll hall is filled with the models and plans submitted by various sculptors for the proposed monument to be erected to Gen. Robert E. Lee at Richmond, Va. The sculp- tors represented are John Donoghue, Charles H. Niehaus, James Milo Grif fith, M. Ezekiel, Gilbert BR. Frith, Rudolph von Deutsch, Alfred Lanz, Samuel Kitson, F. Edwin Elwell, A. Mereie,’ Albrecht Kablistocliek, Henry 0. Avery, A. E. Harnisch, und George Keller. Thecommission to examine the plans and models consisted of Messrs. Edward Clark, J. Q. Ward, and Augustus St. Gaudens. These gentlemen have o formed this duty and communicated their views to Miss Sarah N. Randolph, of Baltimore, resident ot the Lee Monument association. ‘he commission did not know the names of the sculptors, the models being marked only by mottoes. ‘The commission arrived at the conclusion thatin the order of merit for the purpose in- tended the first place should be given to the model marked “Potomac,” and the second to the one marked “Virginia.” In their letter to Miss Randoipb the commission said: “Your commission are gratified to find that this competition has brought out so many models of undoubted merit, and they are unwilling to announce their decision without muking espe- cial mention of the merit of the model marked ‘Humanity.’ When the seals of the envelopes containing the names of the sculptors which corresponded to the mot- toes on the models were opened it was found that Mr. Chas. H. Niehaus won the first pre- mium, and Mr, Ezekiel, the second, while Mr. Altred’ Lanz was found to be the sculptor that modeled ‘Humanity.’ ” Mr. Niehaus, of Cincinnati, to whom the first remium was awarded, is the sculptor of the Bronze statue of Garfield in Cincinnati, amar ble replica of which has been deposited in the Statuary hail at the Capitol. ‘The pedestal on which the equestrian figure in Mr. Niehaus’ model stands is supported on either side by two col ug and two caryatids in bigh reliet, the caryatids representing . HE WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE ADOPT THI RESOLUTION TO REDUCE IT TO $10,000,000. Secretary Manning's reply to Mr. Morrison's inquiries as to the effect of the resolution re- ducing the reserve in the Treasury to $100,000,000, was considered by the ways and means committee to-day. Mr. Morrison favored the adi of the res- olution, notwithstanding Mr. Manning’s advice fo the contrary, and thought that ‘though the ministration’ was opposed to the party upon financial ques ons, the democrats shoula hold to their principles.
