Mr. Morrill, from the committee on finance, reported favorably the House bill providing that the Treasurer of the United States may, with the consent of the Secretary of the Treas- ury, authorize the Assistant Treasurer to act in the place and discharge the duties of Treas- urer, and that in the necessary absence of either the Treasurer or Assistant Treasurer, the ‘Treasurer may, with like consent, designate a clerk of the Troasury department to be acting Assistant Treasurer. ‘The bill also provides that the official bond of the principal of the office should be held to cover and apply to the Person appointed to act for the Ume being. Nearly the Whole Fleet of Mississippi Improvement Vessels Lost. Sr. Lovis, Feb. 16.—O! the sixty-eight boats which composed the government fleet which broke away from its moorings at Carroll's Island Sunday night only sixteen have been saved, among them the most valuable of the steamers, which Js seriously damaged. Six of the others are known to besunk. THE LEGAL QUESTION OF THE POWERS OF THE VESTRY DISCUSSED WITHOUT KESULT, The meeting of the vestry of the Church of we Ascension last evening was occupied with the consideration of the question at Issue between the vestry and the rector, arising from the request ‘Of the former for his resignation and the refusal of the rector to comply with this request.
