THE EVENING STAR ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent bona fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of all the ¢ added together. The Advertising and Cireulation of The Star in 1595—A Large Increase. The following is a correct transeript from the Dooks of this office of the number of new adver- ments printed each month in Tur Star during 1895, as compared with 1884, showing an in- ¢rease for every month of the year, and a total increase of 7,570 for twelve months in a grand ‘The increase is more than double that of 1884 over 1883, when it was 3,54" It will be equally interesting and indeed of greater value to the readers and advertisers to know that without exception the circulation of Tue Star was very considerably greater for each month of 1885 than it was for the corre- sponding month of 1834, the average increase per day for the entire year being 2,758 ina total daily average for each month of 22,123, as 1884. 22,572 22,474 21,933 Aveusr.. 21,445 SEPTEMBER. 21,033 OctowER 21,497 NovemBer. 22.049 DECEMBER . 23,000 265.473 AVERAGE. 19,365 22,123 INCREASE. 2.758 This efreulation is thousands more than that of all the other daily papers in Washington added together. ee Literary Attractions for 1886. In today’s STak will be found the first part of an original and delightfully written story by Mrs. FRANCES Hopesos BURNETT, of this elty, entitled “Much Ado.” This novelette will run through four consecutive issues of the Saturday Donble-Sheet Stax, the last instalment appear- ing in that of January 23d. It will be found very attractive in every part, and in the subtle delineations of character, keen analysis of feel- ing and vivid portrayal of situation, by which it is marked throughout, some of Mrs. Burnett's most artistic and delicate touches will be per- ceived. Although not pretentious as to character or size, and costing complete in this form—in con- nection with much other entertaining and in- structive reading matter—only the trifling sum Of RIGHT CENTS, “Much Ado” is really equal in volume, as it also is in interest, to many of the stories of the day published in book form, and costing in that shape from a dollar to a dollar and half each. This novelette will be followed by other original stories by authors of hardly Jess distinction and popularity than Mrs. Bur- nett; and as they are all copyrighted, their pe- rusal can be enjoyed only by readers of THE ‘Sram. Particulars of these further attractions will be announced in due time. Meanwhile ‘TwE Stax desires it to be understood that, as it has been in the past, so it will be in the future, the very head and front of Journalism in Wash- ington. = President Cleveland takes the ground that ‘tae framers of the constitution designed the ‘Senate to be the assistant and not the enemy of the executive. He proceeds on the theory that the power given to the Senate to Investigate the President's selections and to authorize or disapprove them associates that chamber with the executive in responsibility, and hence the two parties should work in harmony and sym- pathy. The President, therefore, is not dis- turbed If the Senate exercises its powers by a Vigilant Inquiry into the nominations he makes, nor does he expect that all these se- lections will stand the tests that should be ap- plied. There will evidently be no friction be- ‘tween the President and Senate It nomina- tions are passed upon in good faith on their merits. ————— + Governor Hill, of New York, in his inaugura? address yesterday devoted himself principally toa review of the history of the state. Topics nearer the times he said he reserved for his message to the legislature. In the course of his retrospect, however, he made the following handsome allusion to President Cleveland, which, we are informed, was weleomed by a burst of applause: “Elected to the office of governor of the state by an immense majority, he entered upon his executive duties, which he fultilled for two- thirds of bis term, discharging them with such dignity, sterling honesty and painstaking ef- ciency as merited anil received public approba- tion, and elevated him to the office of Chief Magistrate of the nation, where, thus far in bis administration, he has exhibited @ wisdom and statesmanlike ability which has largely in- ereased the confidence which the people re- posed in him.” Under the circumstances this was quite a significant utterance, and we are told it made 1886. 1886. e + ReEE: 816-818 SEVENTH STREET N.
