There has been desperate fight going on for speakership of the house, and at this hour, one o'clock, the chances are about even between ex-Speaker Cargill and Col. Enterkin, For chief clerk there are not less than six candi- dates, and affairs are decidedly complicated for every other position within the gift of that body. There is not so much of a contest going on for positions in the senate, it being gener- ally agreed that the old force is entitled to a second term. Both houses will hold causes this afternoon, but will hardly close their labors before dark: Probably the first work of the house next week will be the unseating of the Hamilton county delegation. There 1s no little talk of the seni torship, and while it is true that no republican can be found who does not claim Mr. Sherr man's re-election, there is, in some quarters, a nervous feeling, and there will be @ feeling’ of Teliet when the question is settled. A DELIBERATE SUICIDE. [ow Richard Cooney, of the Monitor Fleet, Forestalled Heart Disease. Special Dispatch to THR EVENING STAR. PETERSBURG, Va., Jan, 2.—The unusually quiet village of City Point, about ten miies from this city, where is anchored the United States Monitor fleet, was thrown into excite- ment ata late hour last night by the suicide of Richard F. Cooney, of the fleet. The suicide was one of the cvolest and most deliberate ever known in the history of such crimes, inasmuch as the unfortunate man was perfectly sane at the time he committed the act. Cooney killed himself by severing both arteries of the wrist with a razor and then sat quietly down and bled to death, For some time the deceased has been a sufferer from heart disease, and the cause be gave for killing himself was that he had a pre- sentiment that he would diesoon and very sud- denly, Cooney was a native of Brooklyn, ‘and about forty years of aye. Loxpox, Jan. 2.—In home politics two ra- mors are being vigorously circulated which I cannot yet confirm or contradict. The first Is that acoalition of the leaders of both parties will be attempted on the home rule question, This is very difficult to credit. The second ts more possible, namely, that Lord Randolph Churchill has succeeded in inducing the gov- ernment to accept a home rule scheme of mode- rate proposals, and that the government will immedi introduce this and challenge a vote of confidence on it, and if beaten will dis- solve ‘liament. Churchill shrewdly reckons thatthe moderate liberals very likely would Support more moderate proposals than they ‘would get from their own Reatiers, nd that the new members would doalmost anything rather than run the risk of another election in atew Lonpox, Jan. 2.—The Pall Mall Gazette this afternoon Says that it is able to announce that Mr, Gladstone is ready to entertain a feasible proposal from the Marquis of Salisbury to joint- ly concert for a settlement of the home rule question.
