‘ THE EVENING § WASHINGTO TUESDAY... December 22, 1885. ‘CROSBY S. NOYES. ‘The Evening Star bas 2 regular, permanent bona fide daily circulation more than trebic that of any other daily paper published in Washingteu, and equal te that of all other daily papers here added together. Editor. It is not tair to allude to Senator Beck's speech yesterday as an attack on the adminis- tration, as he took pains torefer in terms o: sympathy and eulogy to the views of the Presi- dent and the Secretary of the Treasury as a whole. But he joins battle frankly on the special subject of silver coinage. witit respect to which he maintains that the administration Is ‘wrong. From the indications which have made their appearance during the fortnight’s session of Congress, the silver question will be the only ene on which there will be an open and a serious split between the administration and wing of the democrats In the capitol. The threatened row over the civil service law seem: to have been averted: and on other questions, which might excite discord, there is a disposi- tion among all elements for peace. But th silver men are ixoplacable. They see in the Proposed suspension of coinage only a wicked conspiracy by “the gold bugs” to some make the rich richer and the poor poorer, and they will not listen to argument or compro aise. And as it happens, they have the great advantage of favoring the existing statutes. Pos- session is nine points of the law, especially where the machinery of obstruction is so per- fect as in Congress. es What Washington needs and ought to have ‘without delay is a new post office building, tine enough in architectural appearance to compare favorably with the other public buildings here, (always excepting the new pension office) enough to meet the wants of the government for at least a couple of decades hence, and so situated as to properly accommodate the service for which It ts Intended, without regard to the wishes of property holders and speculators in this locality or that. ras the people of ‘Washington are concerned, with the admirable letter delivery and collection system now in foree, it matters littie what site may be chosen, so long as the government fs satistied that th locality suits its purposes; and elaborate dit cussion about where it should or should not be will only have the effect of delaying or preven: ing the construction of the much needed buil i ee We have heard of the laborer who was so lazy that when the whistle blew for noon just as he had raised his pick-axe, he let go bis hold and Jeftit hanging in mid-air till the noon recess was over, In like manner Congress dropped Its work for the holidays yesterday promptly at ! the appointed time, thoush inthe midst of a ‘eall of states for the introduction of bil the hour of adjourament the clerk had only to Maine in alphabeticat order, but 1,004 bills and joint resolutions had been introduced, “read twice” aud referred to committee. Most of these bills are of no general consequence, but quite a number of them are of importance and | The Newark children, who were bitten by mad dogs and sent to Pasteur for treatment, have been duly Inoculated in Paris by the famous surgeon, and have now nothing to do but ride about the gay capital during the holi- ays and have agood time. Tie process of in- eculation was not painful, and one of the boy compared it to alight mosquito nite. In con- nection with the case, Mr. Pasteur states that he will give the surgeon in charze of the boysa supply of the virus to take back with him to America. This will be cood news to those who are so unlucky as to be biiten by suspected dogs, and who cannot afford a trip to Paris, Pasteur, it seems, hax now 111 cases under |, treatment, victims of dog bites, coming to him from allover Europe. ——————— \fhe descendants of the Pilgrims are celebrat- amg the landing on Plymouth Rock In what their forefathers would have regarded as very frivolous and heathenish jollity, but, all the same, the former are having lots of fun, and, in spite of the forefathers, they are all the bet- ter for it. The Puritans were good stock to come from, but they didn’t know everything down in the Old Colony; and, upon the whole, the descendants are rather more satisfactory as acquaintances and neighbors than were the sorefathers. Tre Scavivar OF THE FITTEST. A revival of the Surtout hus taken place this season, a modulated form of the Newmarket, and a result of a reaction against that extreme form.
