WHY HIS NEIGHBORS THINK HE WAS MUR- DERED AND THAT HE HAS NOT RUN AWAY— HIS MONRY MATTERS—THEORIRS AS TO HOW THE CRIME WAS COMMITTED, &c. The search for Philip H. Haviland, ot Mun- caster’s mills, Montgomery county, Md., who mysteriously disappeared last Thursday night, while on his way home from this city, has been continued ever since, new search parties being formed every day. It 1s proposed to keep it up until some light is thrown upon this mystery. Asa farmer told a Sar reporter last evening: “We want to know who is wicked enongh in our county to be guilty of such an act as we fear has taken place, and to rid ourselves of such a person.” Yesterday a large ty mali road this side ot Wheaton, filed. into the fields and woods east of the Rockville road, stretehing about a mile, and proceeded south ward, keeping on a parallel with the road, tak- ing iti hills and bottoms, swamps, gulleys and every possible spot where a hiding place could be cund.. They proceeded nearly ‘all the way ver Springs, but found nothing suggestip; even aclue to Haviiand’s fate. ‘The ticks of two men across a ploughed field, described in yesterday's Stan, were traced irom the road to the edge of Harding's woods, ‘THE FOOTPRINTS appear to be about the distance apart that two men bearing a burden would walk. One of the boots of one of the men seems to have had a heel badly worn down. The other footprints look as if made by haltsoled boots. tt was between these tracks that the stone on which was & small spot of blood was found. The the- ory, was advaneed yesterday that the supposed murderers had carried their victim through the woods to Sligo branch, back of the woods. The footprints were fully investigated by the whole party yesterday, but were finally rejected for the present, The blood-spotted stone was taken possession of by Sheriff Miller, who intends to take it to Prof. DeSmedt, of this city, for analysis of the blood mark, to determing whether it is human blood, Another circum- stance was the finding of # loose rag on the line of this trail, as if it had been snazged from a formed on the coat or pants. ‘This was in a field on Harding's farm, about two miles from Sligo, Messrs. A. L, and ©. Graeves, at whose store Haviland rested half an hour after passing the tollgate Thursday night, and who have taken much interest and ‘an_active part in these searches, sald to aStar reporter last evening that thé party bad agreed to-day to make a more thor- ough search of the west side of the 7th street road, between Sligo and Wheaton. The coun- ity i generally more rugged and uneven in this direction, and affords more hiding places than further ‘eastward. “If,” said Mr. Graeves, “there has been foul play, nothing willl be left undone to discover it. A TALK WITH MR. MUNCASTER, Mr. W. E. Muncaster, of Norbeck, proprietor of the mill which Haviland rented, said to a Srax reporter today that the coat of Havi- land, which was found in the road, was not found hanging on the fence, as reported, but found in the pines, about ten feet from the fence and twenty feet from the spot where the wagon was seen standing by some ladies Thurs- day night. “There was not a particle of blood-stain on the coat,” sald Mr. Muncaster, “and nothing about it ‘to indicate violence, Haviland’s mit- tens were found in one pocket and the crackers he had bought at Graeves were found in the other. ‘The reports made by a Washington lice officer that there were indications o! Straggle where the wagon was seen and the co: wasiound are not correct. I was there soon after the coat was found, and could not see U least sign of a struggle. ‘Since then, of course, the bushes may have been beaten down by persons searching over the ground.” HAVILAND'S MONEY MATTERS, “The statement that Haviland was involved in debt to such an extent as to make it probable thet he would leave the country without no- tice,” continued Mr. Muneaster, “is erroneous. fs it true that you had notified him to leave the yaill on January 17” asked the reporter. +¥es-bmt there was no unpleasantness about it, Inotified bim last July. The friends of universal education are very hopeful of passing an educational bill through Congress this session. Mr. Blair in the Senate and Mr. Willis in the House will press the mat- ter, and both are sanguine of success. The bills introduced by these gentlemen are different in | many matters of detail, but both provide for the same amount to be appropriated by Con- gress for the public free schools in the states, and if the bille pass the two houses, respec- tively, their differences can easily be adjusted. Senator Blair says he expects that the commit- tee will report the bill to the Senate soon after the holidays, and he has no doubt ofits pasxaze. Ae receives a great many letters and petitions upon the subject, and says there is an almost universal demand for Congress to provide for the establishment of common schools through- out the country. He says that the money Con- gress thus expended would be returned in the increased value of each man’s labor, und the in- vestment would be s good one. The increased industrial value of the people in the south would be equal to $241,727,000 a year if all the illiterate people should be'educated accord- ing to the plan proposed. is j The Indian Ambush in New Mexico. | HOW SURGEON MADDOX AND THE REGULARS WERE SHOT DOWN IN A ROCKY DEFILE.
