Crazed by Religious Fervo A POWERFUL MANIAC MAKES THINGS LIVELY IN WILLIAMSPORT, A telegram from Williamsport, Pa, October 13th, says: A case of insanity, brought on by Teligious excitement, came to light this after- noon, when William H. Bastian, a filer in the Dodge mills, tried to drive his fellow-workmen from the shop. Bastian, for some time, has been attending the religious revivals at New- berry, nnd for days his wife has noticed that he act eer. been bemoan- He has mcessantly ing his fate, and praying that his sins might be forgiven, Yesterday morning, during one of his fits of depression, he tried to kill his wife, but she escaped from him and he went to work. At the mill he became a raving maniac and the police were sent for. It took the combined strength of four officers to hold Bastian. He isa heavily built man and he struggled furiously, but was at last handcuffed and taken to jail. "In jail Bastian managed to get loose. He tore his clothes off and ran into the corridors naked and howled frightfully. He reached the door leading from the corridor, and with tremendons muscular force tried to break itopen. Sheriff Sprague was preparing to start for Gettysburg, but when he saw what the matter was he concluded toremain at home and watch the madman. It took eight men to recapture Bastian. The fields and hilsides about Elliot's hotel were og see flooded, and Mad river rose twenty or thirty feet. The famous slide on the south side of Tripyramid was renewed and enlarged, and that upon the north side doubled in extent. This, which Is not visible from any of the localities ‘much fre- quented by tourists, is formed by the conver- gence of four slides at the top, after which it pushes its way through the primitive forest to within half a mile of Norway brook, where an Immense pile of tree stamps, roots ‘and other debris marks tts terminus.
