THE New NatioxaL THEATER.—The open- ing of this fine new playhouse last night was accumplished in a manner that must have been highly gratifying to all who are interested in Its shitcess. The audience filled the house beyond the point of comfort, every seat and all avall- able standing room being occupied. Among resent were Secret Lamar and fami- ly, Solicitor General le, wife and two laughters; Mr. and Mrs. 8. B. Rounds, Judge Hiilyer and wife aud Miss Hillyer, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Wagzaman, Postmaster and wite, and many other well known citizens. Much admiration was expressed at the beauty of the interior, The decoration of the lobby was particularly remarked. Hoyt’s beautiful cur twin was applauded as the asbestos curtain was drawn up, disclosing Itto view. Before the play of the ‘evening began, Miss Julla Wheeler, member of the old’ Barrett club of this city, read, In an effective manner, a dedicatory poem by ‘Mr. Edward Cropsey. At the end of the second act there were loud and long con- tinued calls for Mr. W. W- Rapley, but that gentleman did not appear. Finally Dr. Frank T. Howe came before the cartain, and in the name of Mr. Rapley, who was too modest to appear himself, made a happy little speech of inks. “Lady A cg the new play in which Mile. Rhea appeared night, is. founded on Bertha Clay's novel, “Fair but False.” The of it contains ae eee ap gi hin ft with by many dramatists e1 Sitron und Bates constructed the present play. ‘The. story and the fate of Lady Ashley bring many suggestions of familiar dramas to the mind of the old play-goer, The “New Magda- len” and “Camille” are recalled to every mind by the motive and the catastrophe, though the ‘underlying conditions are not the’ same. The eornerstone of “Lady Ashley” is laid on a foun- dation of legal ineompetence and blundering that passes belief and stroys confidence in al that Isto follow. ‘The construction of the play. is, however, above the average of the work of beginners in this field. ‘The action is smooth and coherent, and the Interest is gradually de- veloped up to the climax tn the third act. Here, however, the mistake Is made of ending an act which began in a scene of great dramatte force, with one of comparative passivity. Mlle. Rhea was as winning as ever in the try- ing role of the false Lady Ashley. Her rare art and strong emotional power moved her audience to frequent applause. She received at the end of the third act a fine floral ship, the offering of the orderot Elks. Mile. Rhea’ has the present season the best supporting company yet seen with her. Mr. A. H. Williams, being very beautiful and appropriate. “Lady Ashley” will be repeated this evening and Ak tomorrow's matinee. To- morrow evening “Frou-Frou.” FORD'S OPERA Hovse.—“The Bread-Win- ners,” which is @ remarkable example of com- ite dramatic architecture, was presented at ‘ord’s last night, meeting ‘with considerable favor from a numerous audience. The play is said to have been constructed by throwing to- ther scenes from a couple of well-known French plays, and of this there 1s good prima facie evidence. It is in five acts, and two of the sets were unusually good examples of the stage dressing art, These are the snow storm at the foundling hospital and the whirlpool by moon- light. ‘The various roles were fairly well taker “The Bread-W inners” will remain at Ford's ali the week. ALBAUGH'S OPERA Hovsr.—Though the in- cidents of “Michael Strogoff” have become familiar to most theater-goers in this city, the returnof the play drew to Albaugh’s last night an audience of goodly numbers. The ladies and gentlemen engaged in the representation made it, on the whole, of average interest. Many of them were fairly good, while some could lay claim to little merit as actors. Mr. ton as Michael, Cecile Rush as Marfa, Miss Waterman as Sangarra, and Miss Arnold as Nadia, are deserving of mention. The ballets in the frst and fourth acts were entertainin; especially the latter, led by Mlle. Carlotta Bri: anza. This lady id airiness of motion s . The play will remain at Albaugh’s ail the weeic. Hrnzoc’s OFsma Hovse.—That favorite comedian, Mr. Owen Faweett, entertained a full house at Herzog’s last night with the laughable ineldents of “Big Bonanga,” one of Mr. Augus- tin Duly’s most successful comedies. Mr. Faw- cett belongs to a school of actors who make In- teresting every part they undertake, and his impersonation of Prof. Cawallader last night was throughout enjoyable. There are daily matinees at Herzog’s. Dive Mcusevw.—An entertainment rarely seen nownduys 1s 0 old-fashioned variety show, and when one is ound it is sure to be a preciated. Mr. Dan Kelly’s company gave such an entertainment at this house last night to the evident delight of a crowded house. The troupe will remain thee all the week. THEATER CoMIQUE.—Miss Alice Oates and her troupe of burlesque artists last night ap- ared in an entertaining travesty of “The Princess of Trebizonde.”. ‘There were also the usual olfo features. The audience was nu- merous. A Charge Not Sustained. THE VILE CRIME CHARGED AGAINST JAMES x. WILBUR—ALLEGED INDECENT ASSAULT ON HIS LITTLE DAUGHTER. This morning In- the Police Court James M. Wilbur, a well-dressed white man, fifty years old, was charged with committing an indecent assault on his little daughter, Laura, who Is a very bright and intelligent little girl. Laura stated to the court that she was ten years old, and lived at 522 10th street, she having come here from New York eity about six moaths ago. She said her father was in the habit of having her in tue roora with him and indecently treat- ing her. When Officer O'Neill came to the house she said her father sent her off to St. Vincent's orphan asylum, Mrs. Caroline Booth, the little girl’s grand- mother, testified that she had cared for the child since its birth,as its mother, the witness’ daughter, died when the child was two week's old.” Witness had not seen her son-in-law since the child was two and # bulf years old until last full. She had often written to bim, but received no reply. She sald she had witnessed the alleged indecent treatment of the child by its father as described by the child. She said he often had the child in the room with him with the door locked, and she had seen his actions through the key-hole and a crack in the door. She suid she had suspected something wrong, which led her to use such means to ascertain the truth. He wanted to get rid of her, she sald, and send tite child to an asylum, Louisa Bradford, a colored servant, testified toseeing Wilbur in the room with his daughter. OMicer O'Neill testified to making an investi- gation of the ease which led to the arrest. ‘This closed the testimony for the prosecution, A number of business inen testified to the good charaeter of the defendant. Mr. W. B. Woolwine testified that after the arrest he had a conversation with the child, in which she said her father had never doné as stated. She said this in the presence of one of the sisters at the asylum. The little girl admit- ted that she had told different stories about the case, and for this reason the Judge dismissed the case. THE Gover Divorce Case.—In the case of Laura Virginia Godey against Wm. H. Godey, in which « decree of divorce was granted last July, Judge Hagner, in the Equity Court to- day directed a rule ‘on the defendant return. able on the 16th inst., to show cause why he should not be panlahed for contempt in failing to comply with the order of the court—to pay $25 per month alimony, $15 per month for the support of the child and'$150 counsel fees. age FUNERAL oF MR.
