A Series of Fine Races Rowed om the River Last Evening. ‘The Potomac river regatta yesterday after- Roon was @ complete success. All the condi- tions were favorable, and the races were well contested. The races were all a mile and s half straight away, from a point above Long bridge toa point above the Analostan bost-house. The time made was only fair, as both wind and tide were unfavorable. THE POTOMAC CHAMPIONSHIP RACE. The first race, senior fours, for the champion- ship of the river and STAR and Post cups, was contested by the Columbias (Nute, Kintner, Kondrup and Sayder) and Washingtons (Smith- son, Baker, Rvan and Sweeny). The Potomacs light-weights did not put in an appearance. The two crews started on, neatly even terms, the Washingtons rowing 45 strokes to the minute and the Columblas 40. The former soon dropped to 40 and the latter to 38. Zhe Columbias pulled "tn iftcent form, with the long, swinging that Ward has taught them. ‘The Washi. put immense power into their stroke, but could not leave thelr rivals, who rowed well within,| themselves. The Columbias hi the Vir- ginia shore, and at the mile had aslight ad- vantage. At the finish the Washingtonsmade desperate spurt, but the Columbias let out a link and crossed the line winners by two lengths in 9:32; Washingtons, 9:37. THE PRoroseD CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY.— The committee appointed by the late plenary council to arrange for the establishment of the Catholic university at Washington, which has been endowed by Miss Caldwell, has issued a circular to the Catholics of the United States, appealing to them to provide means to endow the eight professorships with which the uni- versity will enter upon its work and to found the bourses which are a prominent feature of the school. The necessity of such an institu- tion is urged and the members of the commit. tee express themselves as confident that they will experience little or no difficulty in raising all the funds needed.
