THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D: C. MONDAY; AUGUST 31, 1885. MONDAY. ROGRY S. NOTES. Personal friends, Mr. Geo. W. Childs and Mr. Jobn R. Young, declare Usat the genera was, to say the least, indiffer- aat to the nomination for a third term in 1880, and only permitted bis name to be used ont of couxideration far the judgement of his political friends. This is not the popular view, bat it is probably the traeone. Gen. Grant was a good party man and would not have opposed his per- sonal feelings to the party's call. This was proved clearly by the zeal which he displayed im Garfield's canvass, although he might have excused himself with a good show of reason. According to Mr. Childs, it was due to Grant's efforts more than to anytuing elxe that Garfield was reseued from despair, and a spirit intused into the campaign that won the day. No one has questioned the great assistance which Grant and bis immediate triends gave the party in the campaign of 1880. Even in 1844, Grant himself exerted himself on behalf of Blaine, but his own power was less, the party was not so anxious to accept his favors, and Lis influential political friends, like Conkling, who had followed him in 1880, were not dis- posed to repeat their service. $< The mid-decennial census has not been gen- erally taken In the western states and terri- tories, where ft would have been usefaf as an advertisement of progress. Only two, Nepraska and Dakota, have made an enumeration under the liberal provisions of the federal law by which the government pays half the cost. Dakota had a special reason for getting at its facts of population, as !t is anxious to enter the Union as one or two states. The territory makes a very good showing, as by the returns the population bas increased in the five years trom 135,000 to 416,000. Dakota, therefore. has now a larger population than Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island or Vermont had in 1880. Southern Dakota has the preponderance of pop- ulation, footing up 263,000. The population of the territory is ample to justify the division info at least two states and their prompt adinis- sion into the Union. oe Summer, which leaves us to-day, has treated Washington fairly enough, though that ten ays’ hot spell will be long remembered. We are now advised to look out for the customary September “seorcher,” after which the seer- suckers and the dainty lattice-work sleeves of the ladies are to be folded away till next year. ee Senator John Sherman is very anxions that | his brother should buckle on his sword and go at the rebels again, but William ts so busy hob- nobbing with confederate generals at Grant's grave and soldiers’ reunions that he has notime to attend to John’s requests. — The Sullivan-McCaifrey fight was not the hibition that the roughs hoped for and raise the ery of fraud. It is not at able that the pugilists had an under standing by whieh they could divide the money of their victims without hurting each other much. The whole performance, whether an honest fight or a “bippodrome,” was discredit- able in the last degree. And yet the fight has at- tracted a good deal more attention even among civilized people than eventa of the first im- Portanee to the welfare of mankind. $$ Advices trom Saratoga are to the effect that the contest for the democratic gubernatorial omination les between ex-Mayor Edward oper, Governor David B.Hill,ex-Congressman. ‘oswell (.
