Nicholson, alias Dewdney, was arrested last night charged with brutally assaulting a young woman named Kate Cusick, who is an inmate of a house on € street in the “Division,” where the assault is alleged to have been com- mitted. It appears that Kate was in front of Nicholson's house, engaged in loud conversa- tion, and he ordered her off, using an abusive epithet. She replied in kind, whereupon he Knocked herdown. She got up and was fol- lowed by Nicholson, who, it is charged, kicked her in the mouth, Knocking two teeth out. icholson left $10 for his appearance in the Police Court this morning, but failed to appear, His collateral was forfeited, and an attachment was issued for him. Nicholson afterwards caine in and the case was set for trial to-morrow. Nicholson stated to a reporter that the woman came to his place and threatened to whip a woman named Bradford, and he ordered her off several times. She refused to goand threw @ Stone at the louse, when he went out and struck her, He said she took out her false teeth and claimed that he knocked her natural teeth out, which he denies, ————— A PANIC ON THE ARKOWSMITH.—An accident on the steamer Arrowsmith when returning from Colonial Beach last evening caused a rather exelting scene on the boat and delayed the arrival of the boat in this city about an hour, The boat left Colonial Beach for Wash- ington about 4:40 o'clock, having aboard 400 passengers. When olf Lower Cedar Point, about yelock, the bulkhead casing of the starboard paddle-box was broken in by a log or piece of Umber which had passed under the wheel, ‘The revolving wheel sent great quantity of water aboard, which streamed seross the deck.
