Considering that this com- pany has already performed this opera for sev- eral weeks and competent to give a de- gidedly commendable performance, the slip- hod fashion in which they acted ‘and sung last night was not flattering to the larze audi- ence gathered. The feature that tecelved the lest commendation was the grand march, Jed by Miss Lisle Leigh, at the opening of the third act. THEY ARE NoT ALLOWED THE USE OF THE G. A. R. HALL FOR A MEETING—A QUESTION OF coLoR. ‘The barbers’ union, which {s an organization composed of white and colored men, advertised to hold a meeting last evening in the hall con- trolled by the Grand Army of the Republicand used by the latter for its meetings. They had engaged the hall from the janitor and offered to Pay in advance, but were told that the money ould be paid on the evening of the meeting. ‘When the barbers assembled at the entrance of the hall,on L street, near 7th, last evening they were informed the janitor that they could not occupy the hall because there were colored mempers in the organization, and that he had been Instructed by the hall committee to say that the rule not to rent the hail to col- ored organizations would be enforced in this instance. = ‘We felt very much aggrieved at this,” re- marked Mr, Ford, the secretary of the barbers’ union, toa Stak reporter this morning. “The hall had been engaged, and we did not suppose that there was any difficulty about our occu- ying it until we had gone there to at- Pena’ the meeting. We were surprised that the Grand Army would draw a color distinct- ion when we do notin our organization, We admit members without regard to color, the only condition being that they must be barbers. There was nothing left for us to do, but to find some other place, and after ashort delay we went to Daly's Hall, at the corner of 7th and O streets, where we held our meeting.” ‘A representative of the Grand Army im to a Stak reporter about the matter, said: it is merely a question of business with us. We havea rule not torent the hail tocolored organizations, and this is done not on account of the color, but simply for the reason that if we allow the hall to be used by colored organiza- tions we cannot rent it to white organizations. It is public hall and we want to get as much revenue from it as possible, and from a business standpoint only have weadopted this rule. The hall is not even rented to colored posts of the Grand Army.” ——-_—__ Serious Charge Against a Former Wash- ingtonian.
