THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON *TUESDAY. papers here added other daily A report is revived, which Taz Star pub- Sished three months ago, to the eflect that nego- tations are in progress between the Carlisle and Randail wings of the democracy looking to the unanimous renomination of the ex- Speaker. There is little doubt that this will be done. Mr. Carlisle gave good satisfaction as Speaker and there is no reason why he should not receive the ordinary compliment ot a re- election. As Speaker of the next House, Mr. Carlisle wouid be obliged to revise his list of commit- teemen, owing to the great number of changes 4m membership as well as from other considera- tions. It is not likely, however, that he would alter the assignments of the leading men. Mr. Morrison is certain to have the chairmanship of the ways and means committeee again ff he wishes it, and Mr. Randail Is equally sure of being put once more at the head of the appro- Priations committee. lo President Cleveland has followed up his order driving the cattle baronsoff the Indian reserva- tions by a proclamation of a still more sweep- ing character that strikes at one of the worst evils at the west,—the fencing In of the public domain by great cattle corporations, From all accounts it was high time that vigorous sction ‘Was taken. Out on the plains, far removed from the ordinary restrictions of law and pub- Ue opinion, the rich companies did as they pleased, and their pleasure was to get richer &nd richer by the systematic disregard of all laws and the rights of the poor. The prophet Isaiah may have had these rathless land-grab- bers in mind when he pronounced a woe upon “them that lay field to field till there be no place that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth.” If so, their particular day of judgment seems to have arrived. —— An event that may have important conse- quences happened last Tharsday, when the em- peror of China attained his majority. For the past twelve years theempire has been governed by a regency which has never been found to be @ very desirable form of government. The young emperor is said to be a man of active and liberal mind, with a leaning towards modern ideas. It would be foolish, however, to assume that his advent to the throne will bring any speedy or radical changes in state policy. $< Col. Stevenson will now have to write a letter to those who endorse unworthy candidates for office. Recently he appointed one F. B. Dun- ‘ton postmaster at Center, Lincolnville, Maine, on the recommendation of most of the “promi- nent citizens.” But it now appears that Mr. Dunton cannot enter at once on the duties of Anis office from the fact that he is serving a term of imprisonment in Jail for embezzlement. It 1s understood that the endorsement of “promi- nent citizens” of that locality will not carry much weight hereatter. a In spite of the rosy predictions of De Lesseps and votes of confidence by pliant directors, the shares of the Panama Canal Company are rap- idly falling in cash value, and the government steadfastly decitnes to bolster up the enterprise gy special privileges. M. De Lessepsis a genius im bis way, but he made a fearful blunder at Panama, and his confiding countrymen are at Jast finding it ont. eee Mr. A. 3. Abell, senior proprietor of the Balti- more Sun, and the senior newspaper editor and Proprietor in the United States, completed his seventy-ninth year yesterday. His vigor of mind aud body afford reason for the bellef that he will live for many years the respected dean —$_$$$<——-<———_— The New York World has succeeded in the apparently hopeless task of raising the money sor the Bartholdi statue pedestal. That ener- getic paper will probably now have to tackie the Job of building the Grant monument, if it is ever to be butlt. a Mr. Garrett makes short work of the propost- tion of the Western Union that he sell out his cable lines or run them in combination. He replies that he won't do either. Resxasts, Reasasrs, Reusasra DRESS GOODS, SILKS, ALL KINDS, HAVE ALL BEEN MARKED A GREAT DEAL LESS THAN cost.
