He will be given the place next in authority to the Secretary, and exCongresmman Jenks, of Pa, will have the place of second master DOCTOES DIFFER. ‘The Columbia Hospital Investigation. TESTIMONY FOR AND AGAINST DR. MURPHY. In the course of the pending Investigation of the Columbia hospital management, Drs. C. Mayfield, B. Poole, H.L. E. Jobnson, D. K. Shute and M. Cuthbert, former medical assist- ants, and Messrs, C. T. Earle, R. Stein and T. B. Bailey, former apothecaries, have been exam- ined. It ay that no regular charzes have been led; but the allegations against Dr. Mur- phy, the surgeon in charge, are intoxication, udeness to ents and employes, and neglect of duties. As stated in yesterday's STAR there are two factions In the board, one accusing, and the other defending Dr. Murphy and bis management of the hospital. The tes- timony taken so far ts conflicting. For in- stance, Dr.Johnson testified that he had seen Dr. Murphy under the induence ofintoxicants while at the hospital; also that Dr. Murphy was rude {0 patients and'omployes and inattentive to his duties. As against Dr.. Murphy it was. stated witnesses that he neglected the hospital for a} rate y that he made the hospital patfents a secondary consideration, giving them guch time as he could spare froma his pay pa- ient Dr. Poole, who was an assistant physiclan for about three years, testified that he had never seen the surgeon ih charge intoxicated at the hospital, nor had he ever seen him Incapacita- ted from any cause for the performance of his duties. He ulso declared that Dr. Murphy de- voted a great deal more of his time and atten- tion to the hospital than was required under the rules; that he had known Murphy, In dan- gerous cases, to givehis attention through the hight, notwithstanding the presence of as- sistanus, One of the former assistant physicians in tes: tifying said that he and Dr. Murphy had had some ‘words; that Murphy had treated hu more as a nurse than a physician, in requiring him to make frequent reports, minute in di tails, asto how he was treating patients; that he told Murphy he did not come there to’ be a nurse, ete, The friends of Dr, Murphy cite tis asan in- stance of his attention to duty, saying that as he was responsible for the treatment of patients he was rigidin requiring reports from assist- ants, ‘They also allege that the charges proceed from former assistants and employes, who are moved by malice towards the surgeon in charge. On the other hand, ax against Murphy, it is, claimed that some positive proof of his indiffer- ence to duty has been produced. It is alleged that he hns violated the rales of the hospital, and, in proof, It ig charged that in one case he administered an anssthetic tog patient in per- forming an operation, though it is against the rules todo so except with the consent of the advisory board. The defense claimed that in the case referred to, after the operation was commenced, it was found’ to be essential to sniesthetize the patient In order to complete it, ‘and that to have awaited until the advisory board could have been convened and consulted would buve endangered life. And so the con- iiict goes on, marked by a good deal ot feeling. Dr. Murphy's friends assert that his enemies have not yet been willing to assume the respon- sibility of formulating the allegations made into regul with thelr signatures attached, because they realize that they cannot be <us- tained. They predict an early and full yindica- tion of the doctor. Tits ents say that there is plenty of material al hand to undo im, and thatit be forthcoming. a ‘The President and the Academy Girls.
