THE INDIA MUSEUM ANNEX DESTROYED AND —A fire brokeont this after- noon in the India Museum “annex” to the great building in which being held the interna- Uonal exhibition of inventions, This depart- ment Is situate just north of the main entrance to the exhibition, and between the eastern wall of the exhibition building proper and exhibi- tion road. The museum was filled with evi- dences of the handicraft of India, carved wood work mainly and other like inflammable ma- terial. The flames spread with alarming rapid- ity, and the whole immense stracture was re- ded as doomed to destruction, ‘The visitors to the exhibition and the attendants as soon as they heard the first cry of fire fled the build- ing, and all escaped without accident. ‘The fire department qui ly responded to the alarm, and soon fully 50 engines were sending heavy streams of water into the burning museum and upon the adjacent property. The firemen final- ly obtained the mastery ‘over the flames, but not until the many articles in the India museum had been almost entirely destroyed and the museum bullding itself very seriously damag: The flames did not extend into the immense structure in which the exhibition proper is be: ing held, and thus the actual calamity dreaded was prevented, The damage to the main ex- hibition is, however, considerable, ‘The Indian museum building is damaged be- Fond Fepair, while its contents may. he said to be completely destroyed.
