Brilliant Scene at the Commencement ness College in Albaugh’s Grand Opera House— of the Spencerian Bi Addresses by the Graduates. When John Philip Sousa raised his baton and the trained musicians of the Marine band began the overture. yesterday afternoon, Al- baugh’s opera house tras filled from pit to dome with the friends and patrons of the Spencerian business college to witness the annual gradu- ating exercises, The wealth of colors of the gay costumes of the ladies and the ‘fluttering of countless fans gave animation to a scene which was worthy of the place and the occasion, The assemblage was the largest that bad ever been seen in that place. Not only every seat was occupied, but the aisles were thronged. While: the audience was being seated, the young ladies of the committee in their tasteful white dresses flitted about the stage and arranged in graceful order the masses of beautiful Howers, which were sent ax tokens of appreciation’ by the friends of the graduates, Vice Presideut Hen. dricks, with Mr. John G. ‘Thompson, Mrs. Senator Voorhees and others, occupied a box on the right, and the former, while object and watched with “interest they ladies as they | arranged the flowers on the stage.” The — fast * had died away when the orchestra be- gan a grand march, and then the vacant stage, Which was set in a beautiful garden scene, be- came the center of every eye as the graduates, preceded by the members of the faculty and int Vited guests, marched from behind the wings and took the seats assigned them on the stage. The ladies came from one side and the geutle- men from the other. and in picturesque erder wound in and around the stage to their plices. al, Prof. Henry C. spencer, and the vice principal, Mrs, Sara” A. Spencer, occupied seats in the center of the front row, and on each were seated the Rev. S. M. Newman, the or of the Congregational chureh; Hon. John Eaton, the U.S. commissioner of’ education; ‘Arthur MacArthur, M RD. Massey r, of the Bal uisiness ‘college, Mr. nd Mrs, Leonard Garfield Spencer, Mr. Zéra D, sutterson, Hon. M. G. Emery. Hon. b. Q. C. ecretary of the Interior, arrived later and occupied a seat on the stage. The exercises were begun with prayer by Kev. Mr. Newman, who closed with the Lord's Prayer, in which the audience were asked to jon, ‘The orchestra then rendered one of the most attrac- tive selections on the program, a caprice for oboe and bassoon. THE ADDRESSES OF THE GRADUATE: Prof. Spencer then introduced Mr. Arthur H, Brown, who proceeded in aclear and forcible manner to deliver the gentlemen's salutatory, in the course of which he referred ina humor- ous way to office seeking and office holt ing as one of the great vocations of life. He handled his theme, the importance of a business education ‘and its growing popularity with urked ability. The suiututory on the part of the ladies was delivered by Miss Sarah AA. Green, who had a very pleasing and attrac- tive style of speaking, which gave poignancy to an address that was full o! good points. While advocating the value of a business training for women for home uses, the speaker added that while it_ is possible that “we may live without books, civilized mev cannot live without cooks.” A cornet solo, by Mr, Jaegar, elicited _appreel- ative applause, aud then Mr. Wm. C. Eldridge, in a terse and’ interesting style, spoke on the subject of “Luck and Pluck.” He was followed by Mr. David Tod Roy, whose strong, imusical voice gave force to the thoughtful address, “The Ethics of Business.” ‘Tue Vice President, who Was an attentive listener, in commenting upon this effort toa friend in_ his box, remarked: “It pital." The orchestra rendered Gounod’s “A Funeral March of a Marionette,” and then ir. G. W. Pitcher, in an easy and graceful man- ner, delivered the valedictory for the gentle- men. The farewell words on the part of the ladies were spoken by Miss Louise Amon Law- renee, Whose grace of person aud charm of man- ner enhanced the effect of the freshness and originallty of the thought. Her parting words were e1 ively spoken. Mrs, Spencer was down in the program for an dddress to the graduates, but she very frankly formed her audience that she had nothing to say to the young ladies, which she Lud not already suid during the year, but proceeded in a short speech to show tliat she hud some strong, wise words in regard to women, not depending on small boys for support, but’ sup- porting themselves and aiding the community. Mr. Spencer said since Mrs, Spencer had omit ted to give advice to the young ladies be would say to them: Don't depend on small boys of twelve for support, but if a worthy young man of twice twelve asks for that pri lege and you like him well enough, grant it. Mr, B. H, Warner tollowed, and from thestandpoint of a successful busifiess man gave sound practi- cal advice to the graduates.” Gen. Eaton also mide an appropriate address on common sense education, and then Secretary Lamar arose to preseutto! the graduates their ‘diplomas; but «fore doing so made a short and eloquent speech, THE GRADUATES were as follows: Ladies—Day class—A.
