Today in the Court in General Term, in the case of the Baltimore and Potomae Railroad Co. agt. the District of Columbia, Chief Justice Cart: ter announced the decision of the court in favor of the complainant. This wasa bill for an in- Junetion to restrain the defendant from inter- fering with them in the enjoyment of their cor- porate rights, and particularly in preventing them from constructing and operating tracks into the eauare, on the west side of 14th street, north of the river. The court holds that the company has the right to the enjoyment of their property, and to lay tracks in the street not exceeding’5¢ wide. The court decided that without the statute the company had the right toenter the square 233 on general principles, for such appurten- ances aré necessary and proper to enable the company to carry out the objects for which it was organized, and to hold the contrary would praetically nullitye ongressional action, =a Cleveland and the Silver Question. COMMENT AT THE CAPITOL—WHAT THE PRESI- DENT-ELECT’S FRIENDS SAY. ‘The silver question has been a subject of con- siderable discussion among democrats to-day, notwithstanding the rush of business. Those ‘who believe that silver coinage ought to be sus pended, stoutly defend Mr. Cleveland and Justify his course. They hold that the whole ‘question was forced at this time by democratic members of Congress, who sought to dictate to Mr. Cleveland what he ought to say in his inaugural me ; that as so many democratic ‘Congressmen joined in a letter tothe President- elect, he was compelled by the rules of court to reply, and that inthis way the question came before the coun’ ‘They contend that the democratic members of the House who first addressed Mr. Cleveland are responsible for the presentation of the silver issue at this time.
