NO INDICATIONS OF HEAVY RAIN, BUT WE MAY GET A SHOWER—METEORIC MATTER THE PROBABLE CAUSE OF GORGEOUS SUNSETS, “Are we never to have any rain again?” asked a Stak reporter of a signal service official to-day. “Well there 1s but ltuie prospect of any at present,” was the reply. |"*But speaking seriously,” he continued, “this 1s @ prett7 extensive drought, and even if tt {s broken tn the near future it will be too late torepair the damage done tothe crops where rain has teen wanting.” “What is the extent of the drought?” asked the reporter. “During September it existed in all sections east of the Mississippi valley and in ‘Texas, but during October general rains have fallen at intervals in ‘Tennessee, tre Olio Valley and the lake regtuns, so that this month, in those sections they have not needed ratp very badly. ‘The drought has contin- ued though, In the middie Atlantic, south Atlantic and guitstites. What lttle rain”has fallen has not been tn sufflcient quanuties to do any good to the crops tn, Uuese sections in tts vicinity we nave not had any rain amounting to anything for nearly three months.” : DAMAGE TO CROPS. “How much damage has been done to the crops?” asked the reporter. “It would be impossible for me to say, a8 our ob- servers make only casual reports upon that sub- Ject. ‘They must have suffered very materially, however. ‘In Georgia the drought as been vers disastrous. Our observer at Atlanta reports that rain has not fallen for over two months, and tt 13 estimated that the cotton erop in that vieimity will Tail short 40 per cent in consequence. In Shreve- Port, La., the cotton crop will be only two-thirds: of the average, and in Nashville the condition of things is about the same. In the vicinity of Peters- burg,Va., It became necessary to close the cotton factories'on account of the scarcity of water.” A BARE POSSIBILITY OF LIGHT RAIN SOON, “and you say there 1s no chance of a change for the better?” “Well, there fs a bare possibility that we will get alight rato soon. You see the map here shows a heavy rain storm in the lake regions. If that passes off to the northward, as It prohabiy will, we will get none of 1t, but If {U comes eastward, as It pos- sibly may, we will get a little shower, Which would be very acceptable.” GORGEOUS TWILIGHT RPECTACLES. “Isee the brilliant sunsets have again made their appearance,” sald Tux STaR man, “Yes, we get reports of the most gorgeous sun- sets and twilight from all parts of the country.” “Can thelF appearance be any more vatistactortly explained than it was last year, when there was $0 much talk about them and so’ many theories ad- vanced to explain them?” “Well, I guess there can no longer be any doubt about their being caused by casmical matter, ‘They undoubtedly result from some forelgn matter in the upper strata of the atmosphere. It can’t be dust it can’t be moisture, because Whatever causes the brilliant sunsets must beat ahelght above which neither dust nor moisture could be; that 1s shown by the length of time the brillant twilight continues, If the cause were in the lower Strata, Where dust could fy, the duration of the brilliancy would be very short. ‘The only plausible theory Js that the bright light 1s caused by mete- oric substances. ‘The meteoric belt_has a periodi- city, 1 18. suy of thirty-three years ‘The nearer the earth in its orbit approaches the center Of the orbit of this meteoric belt the longer will the brilliant sunsets continue, caused by the refraction of the sun’s rays by the’ meteoric dust trom the meteors in the upper strata of the atmosphere. Last year they lasted through a great part of the Winter, and {t ts argued that the earth then reached the nearest point to the center of the orbit. This year itis near enough to the center for the same Phenomena to be visible, but: they will probably not continue so long as they did last year.
