Mr. St. John feels {t ts in New York that the bat- tie Is to be lost or won, and on that account he has cancelled all his appointments outside of that state. Gen. Butler will also pay special need to the state trom this time on. Every effort 1s to be made to Unite the democrats and win over a large Independent repubitcan vote. Judge Thurman says ft ts the bitterest campaign he has ever known, and it will grow worse before It grows better. —— ‘While te abuses charged tn relation to the late changes in some of the public school text books are probably not so great as az first stated, there Is yet little doubt that suffictent ground exists for pretty bitter complaint.
