Sen eee tees ACud for Tax-Payers to Chew. To the Editor of Tue Eventne Sran, While parents are denouncing the exaction of afew centson certain exchanged readers, tax- payers may justly ecmplain of the waste of several thousand doliars annually on the administration of our public school system. Itappears not gen- erally known that there are two schoo! superinten- dents, each independent of the other, but both controlied by one board of trustees, One superin- tendeat, a white man, has charge of the city white schools and the county white and colored schools. ‘The other superintendent, a colored man, has charge of the city colored schools only. If it {s important that a colored man should superintend the elty colored schools, it 1s equally important that a colored man should superintend the conn colored schools. Ifa white man can sutistactorfly superintend the county colored schools, a white man can just as sattstactorlly superintend the elty colored Schools. If there ever @ good reason for this double-headed superin- tendency, none now exists, Necessarily, two superintendents require two offices, two oflice out- its, LW Sets Of records, two sets of Clerks and some other expenses are also doubled. At a moderate estimate, $4,000 are annually wasted on this anomalous and unprecedented management of a school system. If this sum 1s intended as a gratuity for the colored peopie, let it be given to the assoelated charities for distifbution among the greatest deserving number. Ifthe intention is to please the colored people, make the colored super- Intendent one of the three District Commissioners. BI superintendents are as useless as to police superintendents, one white and one colored would be, or as two chiets of the tire de- partment. ‘This’ exereseence on our school system should be cut off. Fortunately, we are no longer ufder Murder Bay rule aud re not compelled to support leeches On the District ‘Treasury, Let the tax-payers demand that tue Comuntissioners tak: Amuediate steps, by securing the repeal of a law or by cutting down’ the next school appropriation, to stop this Waste of the people's money at tie end of the present tlseal year.
