Mr. Alberta Campbell, a former saloon keeper, ond Julius Rider, a broker, made complaint to po- jice headquarters lust night that aman named J. M. Davis had forged Mr. Rider's name to a note, on which he obtained a check for §77 from Campbell snd obtained the money for the check at the Bank of the Republic, The case was put in the hands of Detectives in and Mattingly, who this mornin; arrested John Carnell, a clerk tn the sixt! auditor's office in the Post Office department, and locked him up at the fifth precinct station House on the charge of forgery. ‘the check was made payable to J. M. Davis, and Carnell so indorsed tt. Rider pronounced the note to be a forgery. Atter his arrest Carnell stated to the detectives that he got the money, but the man Davis was a man whor he had known for some tme, and clams Uiat be knew of no forgery. He 1s held at the station for a hearing. Carnell Was released on bail this afternoon, Mr. Jobn B, Simmous becoming his surety. The Petition of Mr, Horsey Withdrawn. THE COURT REFUSES TO ISSUE A RULE TO DECLARE ‘THE SALE VOID. ‘This morning in the Equity Court, Judge James, the case of Ida B. Chapin et al. agt. W. S. Loughery etal. was up. On Wednesday Messrs. Crittenden and Mackey, for Mr. Outerbridge Horsey, of Fred- erick county, Md.,a judgment ereditor of one of the parties, filed a petition, as stated at the time in ‘Tux Stax, asking fora rule directing that L, Tobri- her, Zach Tobriner and others be examined by the auditor, concerning the question of the valldity ot the sale made. After some discussion to-day the court sald Le saw no necessity for inaking the rule, and an order was drawn and signed directing the Withdrawal of the peUtion without prejudice.
