Greely’s Official Report. Lieut. Greely has submitted the following report to the adjutant general of the army, through the chief signal officer, under date of Portsmouth, N. HL, August 1:tp: ‘Sim: I have the honor to report that on June 6th, 1884, at Camp Clay, near Cape Sabine, Grinnell Land, tt became necessary for me to order the military execution of Private Charles B. Henry, 5th cavalry, for continued thieving. The order was given in writing on my undivided responsibility, Deing deemed absolutely essential for the safety of the surviving members of the expedition. Ten had already died of starvation and two more lay atthe polnt of death. The facts inducing my action were as follows: Provisions had been stolen in November, 1688, and Henry's complicity therein Was more than suspected. “March 24h, 1884, the party nearly perished from asphyxia. While several men were unconscious and efforis were being made for their restoration Private Henry stole about two Pounds of bacon trom the mess stores. A clamor for his life was raised, but was repressed. by me. I put him under survelllance until our Waning strength rendered his physical services 1n- dispensable. Later he was found one day intoxi- cated, having stolen the liquor on hand for general issue. A second Ume bis iife was demanded, but I again spared Lim. On his person was founda silver chro. hograph abandoned by me at Fort Conger and stolen by im. In iis bag was found a large quan- Uty of seal skin and a pair of seal skin boots, stolen a few days before from the hunter. Suspecting ‘complicity on the part of several I ordered his exe- cution by three of the most reliable men. After hisdeath the order was read to the entire party and was concurred in by every member as being not only just, but as essential to our safety. TO avold public scandal I ordered that no Man should speak of this matver untl an official report was made of the facts Ihave the honor to request that a court of inquiry be ordered, or a court-martial convened, should the honorable 'Secretary of War deem either advisable in unig case. The head was missing, And could not be found, so that t was at frst sup- posed that the remutns were those of Dr. Pavs. The nes were placed in a hag for removal to the Bear with the remains of six others of the ill-fated expe- dition. Greely's wishes, ‘There was some little comment to-day upon the fact that Lieut Greely in his report made no refer- ence to the annibalisin among the party. ‘This increased the doubts in the minds of some upon that braneh of the story. ‘The Body of Sergeant Cross, “We do not take any stock in the report of can- nibalism,” said Mr, Collins, a brother-in-law of Ser- geant Wm. Lieut. Greet ‘porter—He Cannibalism. ‘Lieut. Greely made a statement at Portsmouth, N. H., yesterday, a8 stated in the telegrams pub- Ushed in Tae Sax last evening, in relation to the shooting of Private Henry, and also as to the stories of cannibalism among his party. After Henry had been detected several times in stealing from the stores, Lieut. Greely sald he was placed under guard for several weeks, until the increasing feebleness of the other members of the party ren- dered it necessary for them to avail themselves of Henry's personal services. Shortly afterward he Stole liquor from the stores and became intoxicated. In Ils comrades clamored for his life, and again . Greely restrained them. On June he again Stoleand carried away some of the provisions Lieut, Greely spoke finally to Henry and told him it ‘Would be policy for him to stop. Said the leuten- aut: “For God’s sake, Henry, as you seem to have no moral sense, remember ‘that our lives depend upon our holdiig together.” With great earnest- ness Henry promised not to be gullty of theft again. Lieut. Greely felt that he could not trust Henry. After revolving in his mind thelr circumstances, the Aeuten:nt on Ais own responsibility issued a writ- ten order, now in the possession of one of the sur- vivors, commanding that Henry be shot at once ‘upon the commission of any more thefts of food. ‘BENRY’S LAST THEFT FROM THE STARVING MEX. At this time the party had left as a last resort only pleces of sealskin and such shrimps as they could procure. About June 6th Henry went to the old winter quarters at Camp Clay, near Cape Sabine, and stole some of the last sedisiin, which ‘Was the only food left. He also took the last. pair of boots in the stores. “On being closely questioned ou Statement to a He- nows Nothing of Any by Lieut. There were ho Car nivernts animals, as the record of the relief expe- dition shows, to Gisturb the remains of the dead, neither did they decay. ‘The fivsh that remained on the frames of those even longest dead had not rotted or fallen away. Sergeant Cross, the frst of the party who died, passed away on’ January 18. He was @ large mah, and when taken from the hallow grave his body was found heavier than any f the others. ‘The flesh was quite frm, and showed no signs of decay excepting a portion of ue land, which was sligutly discolored. Yet of Private Henry, who died only 16 day before the relief party alived, there was nothing left but a few floshless bones." The head had probably been “ation when te truth should be known—as'it was sure to be some time, whether rescue came or nol. In this work of the officers of dhe Bear it was not possibie to remove all traces of the bullet by which Henry met his death, for more was left of the trunk than of any other’poruion. Flesh was cut from the bodies of the other dead as the pangs of hunger rew 100 strong for the survivors. ‘But with Henry, reshly killed tor attemptlng to steal an extra share of ratlons, it was differeut. ‘The men cooked anid ate the hiiman flesh, and by this means life Ww: ugtaihed until rescue caine. Very little Was $2iJ tn the published reports of the Minding of the bones of Henry. Twelve bodies were reportel as brought away from the Greely camp, and It was supposed by nearly all on board, especially those on the Thetls and Alert, that atnong them was the body of Dr. Pavy. — Not once, atter the versel arrived at St. Johns, Was the name of Henry given by any correspondent. Iv appears in Commsader Sehiey’s report to tae department, but all correspondents as well as the Associated Press gave the name of Pavy in the list of the bodies In the tanks of the Bear and the Thetis. How it was determined that the bones were those of Henry isnot known, But it was not until after | the vessels were well on their homeward way, and even ten the crews were lett In the belief ‘that | one body was that of Dr. Pavy, whose body was at St Jouns reported vy Commatider Schley a having been washed away. ‘All officers on board the three vessels comprising the squadron revused yesterday,as they have before, lo have anything to say avout tue terrible dis: closures which have been made concerming Une cannibalism practiced at the Greely camp.
