Lonpon, May 31.—The coming of daylight this morning showed that the damage caused by the dynamite explosions last night was fully equal to the worst antieipations. Dense crowds of curious and excited fe are visiting the scenes of the explosions. Policemen are drawn up in line across the various streets in the vicinity, so as to prevent the access of the multitudes. Orders have been given by the authorities toleave the wreckage gltogether untouched until a thorough examina tion has been made by Col. Majende, the chief in— ‘Spector of explosives. ALARM IN A THEATER. At St. James theater, a hundred yards distant the explosions sounded like two claps of chunder, The audience was seized with alarm Ww! near resulting in a panic. Several ladies and men started to their fect ready to stampede. The audience was reassured by shouts bi every one to sit still, as no harm had been done, BLOWING A HOLB IN AN M. P.’3 HOUSE. ‘The second bomb in St. James square e: against the residence of Sir Watkin Wynn, M. P. Ieproduced a huge white fracture tour tet, tn height by three in breadth. The windows were smashed and the furniture damaged. ‘The dynamite was carried down the tron steps leading to the kitchens and cellars. It was placed in the ‘cellar under the pathway, with a lighted fuse attached. ‘The upward. foree‘of the explosion broke a large hole in the pavement and wrecked the basement apartments of the club. ‘The explosion was most destructive on the west side of the St. James square. The windows in the duke of Cipveland’s house andin the war office in Pail Mall were shattered. ‘The explosion created great havoc in the Junior Cariton club house, Numerous cases of wine in the cellar were completely destroyed. The club will remain closed several days. An hour before the explosion occurred there Was an outbreak of fire at the war office. which was, speedily: extinguished without caustig serious damage, It is unknown whether it was of incendiary origin, THIRTEEN PERSONS, INCLUDING FIVE WOMEN, IN- SURED. So far a3 1s known up to the present hour (noon) thirteen persons were more or less injured. Among these are five women. All the wounded are in the hospital. Five, including the policeman, are in a precarious condition. NEWSPAPER COMMENTS ON THE EXPLOSIONS. ‘The newspapers devote a large portion of their space to the explosions and comment upon them in heir editorial columns in vigorous fashion. ‘The Telegraph says: “It behooves the English people to reflect whether further and sterner meas- ures should not be taken to put a stop to the public. Peril and mischief to which they are now exposed. ach fresh act of cruelty andmalice will strengthen the resolve of Englistmen not to yleld one jot to those who are wishing to dismember the emptre.” ‘The Standard declares that “No concession can be made to outrage. So far, the only result {t has Attained has been failure ani penal servitude.” ‘The Times says: “The expiosions have followed shortly upon the introduction of Mr. George 0. ‘Trevelyan’s Irish land bill. ‘The inference 1s legiti- mate that the baffled nationalists have again vented their displeasure in a dastardly act of mischief.” ‘The News thinks the occurrence is an evidence that “the dynamite conspiracy fs widely spread and successfully baflles tHe detectives. It appears to have easy command over men and materials for ne- farious purposes.” ‘The News urges the public to be watchful of persons leaving or returning to lodgings and hotels. JOHN ©.
