The 101st convention of the Protestant Episcopal diocese of Maryland, which meets at St. Peter's church, Baltimore, next Wednesday, will be charged ‘With the important duty of electing a successor to the late Bishop Pinkney. The convention will be opened with a sermon by Bishop Coxe, of western New York. Rey. Dr. Lewin, chairman of the stand- ing committee, or some other member of that com- mittee, will call the convention to order. As there 4s no bishop the convention will have to choose a presiding officer before It can to the trans- action of business, and an interesting question has Deen raised ast whether the roll of last year's convention shall determine who is qualified to take Part in the ozganization, or whether all clergymen authorized by tbe by-laws to vote shall be permit- ted to take part. Rev. Dr. (George Leeds, of Baltt- more; Rev. Dr. Meyer Lewin, of Upper Marlboro’, Md., and Kev. Dr. John H. Eliiott, of this city, are menitioned as clergymen from whom the president wiil be chosen, Besides the election of bishop the convention will, as usual, choose a standing com- mittee, and the question of changing the com Uon of that committee, so as to provide for lay rep- Tesentation, will be considered. ‘THE CONTEST OVER THE BISHOPRIC, It 1s thought that the contest over an election of ‘a bishop will be a protracted one on account of the contrarlety of the views entertained by clergymen and influential laymen. ‘The high church men, the low church men, the conservative hich church men and ti® broad chureh men, all, it is stated, have thelr pecullar views on the Subject and will seek to enforce them. ‘The convention will aiso Hix the salary of the bishop. Bishop Pinkney re- ceived a salary of $4,009. It 1s proposed to inake the salary of the new bishop $6,000 and furnish him witha residence. A great many clergymen are named among the list of those whose nanes uiay appear in the balloting for bishop. CLERGYMEN NAMED AS CANDIDATES. Elliott, b.D., missionary bishop of western Texas. THE DELEGATES. ‘There are over one hundred and forty clergymen and about one hundred and forty lay delegates en- Utled to seats in the convention, After a bishop 1s chosen his name {s submitted to the standing com- mittees of the various dioceses, If he receives the indorsement of a majority of thestanding commit- tees his name is then submitted to the house of bishops, which approves or rejects it. If the bishops approve arrangements are then taade for his conse- cration, In the Maryland convention the advanced high churchmen expect to poll one-third of the clerical vote for their candidate on the first ballot.
