AN INSTITUTION WHERE WOMEN ARE TREATED BY PHYSICIANS OF THEIR OWN SEX —THE WORK ALREADY ACCOMPLISHRD—A PORMAL OPENING TO BE HELD NEXT MONDAY EVENING. The Woman's Dispensary, which has quietly taken Its place among the charitable institutions of Washington, will be formally opened next Mon- day evening. ‘This establishment {s an outgrowth of the {dea that women are capable of successfully treating diseases as physicians, and that in many cases When afflictions of their own sex are con- cerned, they are peculfarly qualified for their treat- ment. "In pursuance of this view, on the 10th day of May last a meeting was held of persons Inter- ested In the establishment of a dispensary, where poor women and children might receive gratuitous medical treatment at the hands of women. Dr. $C. Busey was elected chairman of the meeting, and Dr. D. W. Prentiss acted as secretary, After an In- terchange of opinion 1t was unanimously resolved that such an Institution should at once be estab Ushed in Washington. THE INCORPORATORS. There are not very many new buildings being projected, but this 1s a usual feature of this Ume of fear. The inquiries made" for lots and houses for sale shows that there is a gopd deal of capital awaiting investment. The increasing number of small investors in real estate ts re- garded as an indication of the staple condition of the market. : ‘Those Interested in suburban property and the extension of the city will be gratified to know that the Washington and Georgetown allroad have begun the extension of their line out 14th street as far'as Whitney avenue. The fare charged on the extension will be three cents and the road will be of great advantage to the residents in Mount Pleasant and vicinity. Mr. James Kobbins ts erecting a $10,000 rest- dence upon Towa circle, of which Mr. B. B. Brad- ford Is the architect. In addition to this bullaing Mr. Bradford is also the architect of four resi- dences on K street, between 21st and 2H streets, Dr. Fred. R. Windsor, of Alexandria, has pur- chased of B. H. Warner three fine lots on’ P street, adjoining the property of Mrs. Otts Bigelow. He intends shortly to finprove this property with hand- some residences, Mr. D. B. Groff is erecting six handsome brick dwelliugs on North Carolina avenue, near 10th street sontheast, which will cost about'$3,000 each, Mr. Robert E. Smith is erecting a three; ed Drick front dwelling on 6th street, between yivanta id D street southeast, which will cost about $7,000. Dyer for $1.50 per foot. —— ‘The Fire Department. ANNUAL REPORT OF THE CHIEF ENGINEER. The annual report of Chief Engineer Cronin, of the fire department, sets forth that during the last fiscal year there were 152 alarms, of which 129 were for actual fires, 18 for chimneys, and 5 for false alarms, ‘The aggregate of the reported losses was $46,551, and Insurance $43,326. There were 27 more fires during the past year than the previous one; the Tosses were $94,074 less Chan for that period, and $40.696 ess than the average for the previous ten . He recommends that provision be made for * new companies, there being especial need for additional service in the northern and eastern sections of the city. He urges also the necessity of inereasing the number of tire plugs. ‘The expendi- tures on’ account of the tire department were 5614.
