Gen, Wright, {n his annual report, of which a Summary was published In yesterday's Srar, calls attention to the report of the board of engineers on Gefenses and fortification, and expresses the hope that careful consideration of the shbject by the Secretary of War and Congress may secure the means, by liberal appropriations, for thelr mprove- ment. ‘The report says that it is well known that our coast, with its Important ports, is Virtually defense- less against a modern naval attack, and proper anxiety for the care of the national honor and inter- ests, which such a statg of things should suggest, May perhaps be quicted by the impression that upon the approach of hostilities our vast resources would enable us to iinprovise some sort of adequate defense. The wholesale and jobbing business has been Uvely during the past week, large quantities of pro- visions having changed hands during that ume, ‘The flour market ts steady at last quotations, with fair recelpts, sufficient for current, demands, al- though grades of extra are called for. Wheat is Steady in prices, cholce ranging from $1.10 to $1.15 per bushel and fair to good $1 to $1.05. Corn has dropped some, but oats remain firm. Hay 1s rather aetive and choice timothy in demand. BUTTER, EGGS AND POULTRY. Fine grades of butter are taken readily, but there 1s no inquiry for common kinds, the market being flooded with them, especially with the imitations, which, in many cases, it is believed are sold for gen- uine butter. Fancy creamery sells from 30 to 31 cents; prime, 27 to 28 cents per pound. Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania are taken, choice se- plections, at 23 to% cents; good to prime, 16 to IS cents. As the receipts of eggs’ are running small the mar- ket grows stronger. Near-by are worth 30 to 31 cents per dozen; western 29 to 30 cents. More good dressed poultry is wanted and less live chickens, the latter hot meeting with quick sal Turkeys, dressed, choice, per pound, 12 to 14 cents; same, undrawn, per pound, 11 to 13 cents; live, per pound, 12 to 13 cents; chickens, 10 to 12 cents. FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. Dried fruits are low in price at present, except nice evaporated apples, which run from 12 to 13 cents per pound. Nuts of all kinds are in demand, and good prices paid. Chestnuts are generally of a poor quality. Good green apples, packed carefully and in sound condition, are in good demand and sales quick. The poorer qualities, carelessly put up, are nol wanted. ‘The vegetable market has been generally well supplied with good articles. Potatoes are worth from 45 to 60 cents per bushel; sweet, do., $1.73 to $2.25 per barrel; do., eastern shore, same prices; yams, 75 cents to ¢1 per barrel. Cabbage plentiful, at $3 lo per hundred. Yellow onions 60 to 70 cents per bushel; red, 60 to 70 cents. Live stock 1s selling well, and both fresh and cured meats at fair prices.
