The Address Adopted. Lovrsvitte, Ky., Sept, 27.—The national colored convention late last night adopted the following address: ‘The national convention of colored men assem- bled respectfully present the following as embrac- ing and presenting their views and sentiments: ‘hat we are grateful for and rejoice én the miraculous emancipation that came to our Tace twenty years ago. The shock of embattled arms Was the lullaby of a nation born in a day. We cannot forget the great sacrifice of the women and heroic men who made possible the struggle In which treason and slavery were consigned to & common sepulchre, nor would we be unmindful of the measure of devotion and patriotism that the White and colored soldters rendered the nation. Second. That we are not Insensible to the fact that the Congress of the United States has shed upon the statute books many laws calculated to make Us secure In our rights as citizens, nor would Tre be forgetful of the magnificent amendments to the Constitution intended to render forever im- Possible the crime of human slavery. ‘Third. We do not ask for any more class legis- lation. We have had enough of this. But we do believe that many of the laws intended to secure fous Our Tights 98 citizens are nothing more than dead letters. In the southern states, almost without exception, the colored people are dented justice in the courts, denied the fruit of their honest labor, defrauded of their political Tights at the ballot box, shut out from {earning trades, cheated out of thelr civil rights by inn keepers and common carrier companies, and left by the states to an Inadequate opportunity for education and general improvement. Fourth. We regard the labor question, educa- ton and sound moral training paramoutit to all other questions. We believe thak these questions, especially in the south, need recasting, and that the plantation credits and mortgage system shoutd be abolished; that honest lavior should be remunerated; that’ ‘the land-holders of the south should recognize that this question 1s to be solved by encouraging the negroes to industry, to frugality, and to busi- ness habits, by assisting them to acquire an {uterest in the soll, by paying them honest wages for honest work and by making them content and happy In the land of their nativity. The white ten and owners of the soil in the south can settle the question of labor and capital between the white and the black. Fitth. We beileve in a broad, comprehensive system looking toward the education of young colored girls, 80 that they may become intelligent and faithful women, and of young colored boys, that they may learn trades and becoine usetal tren and good citizens. The religious and moral train- {og of the youth of ourrace should not be neglected. ‘The hope of every people 1s in adherence to sound Social, logical and ethical principles.
