September 27, 1883. == — = Editor. — Ske Evening Star has a regular. permanent bona fice dally circulation more thar trebie that ef any ether dally paper published in Washington. and conal te that of all tne etner dally papers here added together. ‘Tux Sax office is connected with the Telephone Ex- ange. The New York democratic convention, 1n session at ButTalo to-day, starts with practical harmony in the party attained. The masses of the democ- Tacy Inthe state actually forced the state com- Inittee to recede from Its determination to exclude all delegates from New York city, except such ag ‘Were chosen by the county organization. Ata Ineeting yesterday the committee, Dy a vote of 22 to 10, decited to apportion tue elty delegation be- tween Tammany, Irving hall and the county Gemogracy. ‘This action was in obedience to the dverwhelming sentiment of the party, expressed through tts organs and In all the county primary Conventions, Tammany, for the second tims since its bolt against Gov. Robinson, has its claims a3 a Part of the democratic organization, formally Teeognized. The desire for harmony has pre- ‘Yalled in all elements of the party. If there were Some leaders who for the sake of punishing Tam- Tiany, were willing to risk another factional war, they have been silenced by the loud demand for Unity of action. There 1s no concealing the fact that the democrats have very largely improved thetr prespect of carrying New York, by avoiding @ factional fight. With the harmony of purpose snd action that now seems assured, they are fn @ much better condition than the republicans. Still, & break In the democratic ranks might yet occur. ‘The truce tacitly agreed upon has not obliterated factional Imes, nor has {t eliminated the feeling of hostility between Tammany and tts enemies. But With the inspiring prospect of success just ahead, ‘the chances are that the democrats will hold to- gether. o ee The Mossachusetts deinocrats have again placed Gov. Butler at the head of thelr state ticket; and, indeed, they could not do otherwise, with any hope ef succes, He has made the tssues upon which thestate canvass 1s to be fought, and for the democrats to nomtnate any other man would have Deen an abandonment of their whole position and tacit confession that they have been inthe Wrong. The governor himself recognizes the tm- pelling influences of the situation. In his speech tothe convention he declared that If there was any cther man who could property take his place he would gladly “step down and ylel1 him room.” He professes to feel very sure of re-election, but ils shrewd political judgment probably whispers to hira that there ig a good deal of doubt about the outcome. The repubifcans have a strong and popular candidate, and they are determined to Ivave nothing undone to defeat Gov. Butler. ——— It isevident that the confdsnce expressed by Mahone and his sub-bosses in Virginia as to the result of the election, {5 all assumed. While pro- fessaing to feel secure they are straluiag every herve, and are resorting to secret methods of a questionable character, to say the least to avert defest. A confidential cireular addressed by Ma- hone to his agents requests them to send him as “quickly as you cana list of the names of such funders as you think are reasonably open to con- jon, giving the post office of fach.” There may be nothing wrong in this secret way of under- taking to convert voters to his side, but Mr. Ma- hone cannot complain if his motive ts suspected. itis charged by the democrats that the scheme of the coalitionists 1s toascertaln the names of such of their opponents as might be convinced by ‘the use of means not recognized as legitimate, ——_—__e»—___— The reduction of the price of the New York Times and Herald in New York to two cents per single copy 1s not likely to beneftt the public. S.xty news dealers in that city signed an agree- ment last night to charge three cents for each copy.
