If there 1s any factional con- test In the convention It will probably be over the Bomination for secretary of state. The stalwarts favor the renomination of the present incumbents (all stalwarts) for secretary of state, controller, attorney general and engineer. The half-breeds Propose Gen. Ethan Allen, an untiring opponent Of the oid machine, for secretary of state. The ehances are, however, that the necessity for har- mony will lead to some compromise arrange- ment. In Massachusetts the refusal of Mr. H. L. Pierce | at the last moment to head the ticket, surprises and disappoints the republicans. It was the plan to nominate him by acclamation. The all-absorb- ing idea ts to find a man that can deat Butler. The Gorman faction has carried everything be- fore it in Maryland, and the nomination of its men ‘at the Baltimore convention to-day becomes a Mere pro forma proceeding. Gov. Hamilton has Deen forced out of the fight. Mr. McLane will be Rominsted for governor and ex-Congressman Roberts for attorney general. The managers have yet to determine upon a candidate for controller. ‘The defeated faction is very quiet so far, but there 48 discontent, apd while {t may not break Into Open revolt, the effect will probably be felt at the polls. ——_+e>____ When Judge Hoadly was nominated as the demo- eratic candidate for governor of Oilo, the party based Its calculations of electing him upon the Vote of the cities. The theory was that the liquor interest would support Hoadly, and the liquor dealers and thetr friends are most numerous in cities. It was even calculated that Houdly might Jose some democratic support in the rural districts for the very reason that made him streng In popu- Jous town and cities; that his admitted alliance with the liquor dealers would Influence country democrats with temperance proelivities to scrateh him, It was intimated that tn Cincinnati, Cleve- land, Toledo and Columbus, the four leading cities of the state, the democratic candlJate would getalargely increased vote over that usually Polied by his party. ‘Tne situation In these four Cities to-day does not indieate that the demo- cratic ticket will poll the average party strength many one of them. In Cincinnati there is open and uncompromising warfare between two or- ganized democratic factions, each having a com- Plete ticket im the field. In Cleveland there is a umerous element that makes Lo s: st of its hos- tility to the local leaders apd Ucket. In Toledo Party differences have not reached the stage of ‘Open rupture, but there Is discontent, and apathy Fesults from it. In Columbus old factional feel- | ing still excites distrust, and secret plot tings are €arried on. At present, therefore, the outlook for the Ohio democrats is not hopeful ee Judge Thomn ts quoted as siying In answer to the question what action tue civil service com- mkssior. proposed to take in reference to the Mahone circular to Virginians in the depart- | ments: “As far as ft Is wit hii in the power of the commls- | sion to se tht the provisions of the clvil-servics | Jaw are strictly adh-red to, 1t ig their purpose to doso. Denny, the Consul General of the United Stites at Shanghai, China, of the death. on the 25th of July, 1883, at Shanghai, of E. BLACK- woop. ‘The legal representatives of the deceased can obtain sepl9 further information by applying to this Department. 1t WALKERS, 204 IENTH STREET NORTHWEST, Ca:pet Jining Felt, Shoemaker’s Anti-equeak Portland and R. Tar Ovr Crormxa Is made with SCRUPULOUS CARE for every detail will be admitted by whoever may come to our clean ana inviting stors and examine most any of OUR OWN well-made and nicely-tiniehed garments. ‘The materials used in the making of OUR CLOTHING me carefully selected and well tested, and = most important feature is the cloth shrinking. We use a new and orizinal process, which is skillfully managed by expert cloth workers, by which ALL goods are treated before being cut into garments. This pro- cess thoroughly chrinks the cloth, sets the fiber, and removes all false finish produced by hydraulic pressure at the mills, leaving a solid face that remains through all the manipulation incident to cutting and making. Well-informed elothiers pronounce this method an improvement equal to 10 per cent on the value of the product. But very few of cur garments ever show traces of pressing—those unsightly marks of Ready- made Clothing. Men want good, reliable clothing, and the reputation of a maker should be taken into account when deciding where to buy. We do not quote ‘*One-half” former price, that modern(?), novel(?) and alluring custom so much in vogue by many houses, but we say to ALL: HERE 1s Clothing Store where the finest zoods are kept, where the LOWEST PRICES ALWAYS prevail, aud where there is absolutely no r sk in dealing.
