The chairman, J.E. One speaker said that the leaders in the other convention had been drilled the day before by white democrata Another said that there were brains enough among the colored men of Maryland to manage their own affairs aud that there was a $5 democratic note on the head of every man in the other convention. Resolutions were unanimously adopted recogniz- ing the spirit of discontent in the ranks of the col- ored republicans, caused by thelr political import. ance not being properly recognized, and referring to an attempt to inaugurate an independent move- ment. They advise concessions on the part of the leaders, and declare that a fair representation in the state and city committees and in the state and national conventions will go far towards satlsty- ing these discordant elements; that whatever their complaints be, they sincerely denounce the leaders of any Independent’ movement, and any such movement, as unwise and tmpolitic. ‘They therefore recommend the colored votars to organe ize everywhere, and the appointment of a comintt- tee to call a council of leaders of the colored peo- ple, and the appointment o: an executive commit ‘The meeting adjourned with three cheers for Holton. ——_—_--____ Explosion on an Excurnon Stcamer. THR BOILER OF A HUDSON RIVER STEAMBOAT BLOWS UP—MANY PEOPLE KILLED AND INJURRD—JA¥ GOULD aS 4 LIFE-SAVER. ‘The excursion steamer Riverdale started up the Hudson from New York on its trip to Haverstraw at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon from the foot of Harrison street. When opposite the foot of 18th street her boilers exploded. Eye-witnesses on the shore saw what seemed to be the whole of the in- side of the vcgsel fly into the air with a report like the discharge of acannon. The shell of the hull careened over, but continued up the stream the momentum of its own until t_went down, bow first, at the foot of 15th street. About twenty of the passengers on the steamer, Inciud- ing everybody in the cabins, were blown up in the explosion. The rest selzed_ life-pr and Jumping over the rail into the river, were (sowed up by @ number of tugboats that mi J mediately put out from the Now York and fersey shores to their assistance. Three persons Were killed and eight wounded. Among those Who were blown up and badly scalded ts said to be Gardner, the evangelist. On the arrival of the ambulance the body of Mrs. Sisson, of Tarrytown, was brought ashore in a boat. Her grandson, Whose name ts Chapin, had jumped from the up- per deck and was picked up by a tugboat. George A. Davies, a fireman on the Riverdale, was terri bly scalded by escaping steam. The Riverdale Was an old boat, and ran up the river from New York to Haverstraw and Cornwall. The Reliance, Q.coal-tar boat, was near the Riverdale when shé blew up, and drew nearly forty people from the water. Other steamers and tugs also hastened to the scene. The steun yachts of Jay Gould and Mr. E. 8. Jaffray were lying at the foot of West street at the time. Both Mr. Gould and Mr, Jaffray had Just gone ashore when the accident occurred. Upon hearing the explosion they Imrne- diately turned about, and putting out to the scene of the wreck in’ their gigs ordered their Yachts to foliow without delay.
