But if the sparrows Were hot here they would be a great deal worss.” THE SUBJECT DISCUSSED BY THE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. At a recent meeting of the Horticultural So- elety, of which Mr. Saul is president, he stated his views as above, and remarked that what was sald by a schntific man in Baltimore recently, that there Was Ho city In the Union where the ‘trees Were more generally attacked by insects than this, was untrue. The trees here were generally clean and.-bealtiy, more so thun in most plices, and he belleved that the sparrow had much to do with It. Mr. J. T. C. Clark remarked that what had been sald as to the benefit of tie sparrow may be true as regards the clin, but the evil they did over- balanced the good, ite had seen then pluck both flower and frult, and he resorted to poison to keep them down. “He haa never seen a sparrow stroy a caterpillar, and he called attention to the trees on 11th street, between K and L, which were formerly infested with the caterpillar, and said that they were destroyed not by the sparrow, but by the commt:<sion. Mr. D. 8. Curtis remarked that 1n Madison, Wis, where the Insects attacked the ash andclm, the trees were now healthy, apd had been go since the introduction of the sparrow. Some of the scien— tific men of that city had examined the subject, 1 failed to find tn the crops of the binds any grain or fruit, but they found the germ of the Caterpiliar. There had been much sald against the sparrow, and at one time it was pro} that, the state should offer a bounty for their heads, but now the sentiment had changed, and there was a disposition to protect them. Mr. Parker, of Bos- ton, had made examinations, and had come to the conciusion that the swallow destroyed insects. Mr. Clark said that formerly wrens, martens, &., were wih us the year round by the hun: dreds, but that they had been driven off by the sparrow. THE ELMS IN THR AGRICULTURAL GROUNDS BLIGHTED. “sTiere are a number of elms in the grounds of the Department of Agriculture,” sald one of the Cfiictals to~tay, “which show signs of blight. I ik that my friend Sau! has not been about nh recently, not to have seen the ravages of the insect, and he was a little off the other night at the Horticultural society as to the elms, and also as to the sparrow. At the Agricultural depart- ment a few years ago Profs, Riley and Saunders made an experiment and thoroughly syringed a, row of elms with London purple, a sub- stance made of the refuse of analine, as a remedy for the ravayes of the Insects. As for the spar- rows, I have seen them take the wings off an 1n- Sect and roll the body up so as to conventently carry {t, and then take it to their young; but it 13 sald by entomologists that they do this when raising their young. Ou the whole, while I do not regard the sparrow as of so much benefit as Mr. Saul thinks tt ts, Ido not object to it, for Ido not belleve that It is ag bad a Dirdas Its éneiies would make of it In a short time, however, we shall kuow more about the sparrow, for scientists are investigating: him.” eee RELEASED 4 SECOND TIME ON BalL._—On Sat afternoon Edwin C.
