A muss meeting, under the auspices of the Brotherhood of Telegraphers, was he'd last eve- ning at Ford’s Opera House. The members of the brotherhood marctxd to the place of mecting in a body. Representatives of the different trade or- ganizations were alzo present, and seated on the stage were Messrs, J.:G. McNamara, of the tin- ners’ union; Jos. Fanning, stonecutters’; Wm. F. Rabbit, plasterers’; G. F Ennis, painters’; A. D. Brock, typographical, and 8. B. Shelbley, master workman of the brotherhood, who presided. ‘The object of themeeting was to listen to amad- dress by T. V. Powderly, of Scranton, Pa., the grand master worlgnan of the Knights of Labor, and he was at once: introduced to the audience. AS he stpped to the front he placed a ewspaper on the stand containing some newspaper cuttings, to which he referred in the course of his remarks. After speaking of Vanderbilt, Jay Gould and others, as THE “DANGEROUS CLASSES,” Instead of the working men, he said that these men were guilty of murder. In proof of this state- ment he read the newspaper account of a collision between two freight trains recently In New York state where six men were killed. The accident ‘Was attributed to the telegraph operator, a boy of seventeen years, who had gone to sieep from fatigue causel by long hours. The speaker sald that if the telegraph company had not compctied this boy to do the work of two, and perhaps three men, the accident would not have happened, RIGHT WoURS A DAY'S LABOR, He then proceeded to give the reasons why the laboring men demanded that the hours of labor should be fixed at eight per day. One reason was that where there were four men now at work ten hours a day, and one mon idle on the outside, if two hours was taken from each man’s day, that would make @ day’s work for the idle man, and where foar were employed, five would be at work. This reduction in hours of work would allow the laboring man to induige in mental recreation and ft himself for hts duties as a citizen of this great Tepubli~. Another effect would be to bring the production down to the consumption. At present there was too much produced and a more equal ratio should be maintained. THE KNIGHTS OF LABOR. In giving an account of the origin and pur- poses of the Knights of Labor he paid a warm tribute to the founder, Uriah 8. Stephens, who, as an original member of the Garment Makers’ asso- clation, evolved the {dea of the order and pre- pared its first ritual, Its branches were now tn every state of the Union, in Canada and in Europe, and the demands now made by the laboring men would have been considered revolutionary ten years ago. Before clostn: his remarks Mr. Powderly read a ral manager of the Western Union, had been re- quested to resten, This was received with great applause, which ‘continued for some minutes, Aiter urging that the pubile give to the telegraph- ers not only sympathy but financial ald, the meet ing adjourned. ——————— ‘The President's Trip.
