It appears that Samuel Willlam3,a dark mulatto, last fall married Sally Williams, who 1s somewhat lightér, and last month they had a son and heir. Before the babe was a week old Mrs. Banks, a colored neighbor, asserted that it was a white child. For this expression of opinion Williams and his wife entered sult before Justice Clark against Mrs Banks for damages for slander. The day for trial having been set the parties met, and there “was quite a crowd present. ‘The trial lasted but a few minutes, for the justice, after looking at the child, pronounced it a white one and distmiased the sult at the plaintiff's costs. This decision was not satisfactory to them, and they announced that they would pay no costs. Notwithstanding the decision of the jdstice Wiiltams fs satisfied that the chit ts his own, and 1n this coneluston most of tue Bowie people cotn- cite. | Further, they are backed by the statement of the physician, Dr. Linthicum, that the baby Is not a white child. The Vacant Bishopric. THE ACTION OF THE STANDING COMMITTEE OF THE DIOCESE OF MARYLAND—STEP3 TAKEN TO HOLD PINKNEY MEMORIAL SERVICES. It was stated In a spectal dispatch to Tar Star yesterday that the standing committee of the Pro- testant Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, which met in Baltimore, yesterday, had decided that they found no clear authority vested in that committee to call a special convention to elect a successor to the late Bishop Pinkney. Rev. Dr. Meyer Lewin, the chairman of the commitice, presided at the meeting, with Rev. A. P. Stryker as secretary. ‘The other members present were Rev. Samuel R. Gordon, D.D., Rev. John H. Elliott, 8 T. D., and Rev. A. M: Randolph, D.D. Rev. John H. Chew and Rev. George Leeds, D. D., were prevented from attending by sickness. The committee transacted much other business Telative to the affairs of the diocese, All the Tecords of Bishop Pinkney’s episcopal work, since his late report to the convention, are now in the handsof the standing committee. A committee ‘Was appointed to make arrangements for holding & memorial service in honor of the late Bisliop Pinkney some time during the coming ‘fall. Av- cording to the view accepted by the members of the committee, the bishop being president of the convention, alone had the power, according to the Tules of the convention, to call a special meeting. By the action of the committee the election of bishop Is now deferred until the next regular meeting of the convention, in May, 1884 ‘There Will be a great many episcopal duties to perform in the ‘way of confirmations, ordinations and perhaps the ded.cation of ’ new chapels or ¢l urches pending the election of a new bishop, but it 1s expected that no embarrassments Wil arise, as bishops of neighboring dioceses can de’ invited to perform {hese offices. At Mount Calvary P. E. church In Baltimore, last Sunday, circulars were distributed contafning a prayer or anthem concluding with the following: “May ‘Thy boundless loving ktnd- ness, O Lord, grant to Thy church in this diocese shop who shall be pleasing to The tn holiness ef life. and profitable to us in watcnfulness and zeal. Throuzh Jesus Christ our Lord. Amon.” This, 1t Is stated, will continue to be said by clergy and laity of that parish during the vacancy in the bishopric. ——— A Lively Time Making an Arrest. The country ts large enough for all, and this war has caused the new Postmaster General to call these lottery companies “Illegal and frauds” and deny them the use of the registered mails. The C. D. Co., by their fair manner of drawing, hope to merit patronage without, saying anytht evil against other companies. “Live and let live” will henceforth be their motto. On July 3ist, in Loulsvile, Ky., the next drawing takes place with & capital prize of $20,000 and fumerous otner large prizes, AS Uckets cost only $2 each, everybody Should have one, including their rivals, as they would be overjoyed by returning them “good for evil” by seelng them draw a bly prize.
