_ THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON TUESDAY... SIuly 17. 1883. — 2ke Evening Star bas a regular. permanent Bena Se daily circulation more thar crevice that of any other daily paper vublished in Washinaten. and caual to that of all tne etner dally papers here added teaether. = ‘Tux Stax office is connected with the Telephone Ex- ‘Penge. Bubeeription, fifty cents per mouth, POSITIVELY mt aDvaNcr. Of all the events and expressions going to show the extent of the movement to re-nominate the “old ticket” of Tilden and Hendricks, perhaps an editorial in the New York Star of last Saturday 4s the most significant The Star ts owned by John Kelly, and ts the organ and mouthpiece of Tammany. It has been in the past ferociously anti-Tilden. In the editorial referred to, which ‘Was given a leading place, the Star comes out for ‘the “old ticket” It siys that if the national con- vention decides to re-nominate Tilden “no demo- crat has a right to object.” Reviewing recent oc- currences, including the expressions of Tulden’s nearest {riends and the Hendrick’s interview, the Star concludes that the old ticket “stands wait- ing for a sign of democratic recognition and ap- Proval.” Hitherto the Star, backed by Tammany, has been a supporter of McDonald, but this sud- en change of front seems to indicate that Bo:s Kelly end Mr. Tilden have come to terms, and ‘that “the cruel war is over.” ee ‘The New York Times has expended labor and Postage stamps in collecting and collating expres- sions from all parts of the country as to presiden- tal preferences for next year’s race. Of four hun- red letters addressed to citizens of all the differ- ent states three hundred and twenty-four replies, giving the prevailing sentiment in the respective Jocullties of republicans and democrats, were re- celved. According to the showing made by the Times’ correspondents Blaine leads tn republican favor and Tilden tn democratic. Arthur comes hext to Blaine, with Elmunds next. McDonald ts Dext to Tilden in democratic estimation, and Bay- ard third. These random letters may be regarded 4s affording some insigiut into the general feeling On the subject; but it must be remembered that nearly a year will elapse before presidential can- aidates are nominated. A good many things may happen in a year. ———_+o»______ The tide of immigration, which for several years Poured upon our shores in steadily Increasing 1s now on the ebb, For the yearended tit last, the total number of arrivals was b2,524, against 770,492 for the preceding year, a falling cff of 28 per cent. Since 1870 the total tm- migration to this country has been 12,196,295, the largest number arriving in any one year being 770,42 for 1882 In 1881 the arrivals numbered 669,491, being second, in the proportions reached,to 1882 In the early part of the present year the Indications were that the steady Increase in the Volume of immigration shown by the preceding several years would be kept up; but before the first six months had passed the diminution set in and it continued through the yeer, The falling- ff 1s attributed to labor troubles in this country and the reduction of wages in many branches of industry. w Hampshire—what does the world g: nerally—think of Judge Jerome A. Smith? He sent a letter toa member of the legislatare of that state, yesterday, saying: “I am not, and never have been, a candidate for Talted Styles Senator, and should not accept If elected. Please make this sufficiently known to Prevent anybody voting for m Mr. Smith ought to be put Ina glass case and exhibited throughout the length and breadth of the country. Soe 7~__. According to the Graphic it is understood that the gentleman who furnished the Tilden inter- View to the Times, in which the sage of Greystone plated himseif unreserve ily 1a the hands ef such Of his friends as. want to nominate him for the Presidency, ts Mr. John Bigelow. If the Graphics Surmise ts correct the matter assumes consider- aple significance. Mr, Bigelow was likely to know what he was talking about. ——_—__e»___ ‘There will not be any serious disturbance be- tween the relations of France and England if the French government can avold it. In the chamber Of deputies yesterday the French minister of for- @ign affairs stated that if any error had been committed or passion manifested by the French admiral at Madagascar the government would make such reparation as @ sense of justice dic- tates. The English people, in their over-sensitive- ness, have made a mountain out of a mole-bill. ———_<_<o2—___ From the number and character of snake stories coming from all parts of the country we are satis- Med that the present 1s a good time for the temper- ance people to commence getting up a boom. Where are Gough and Murphy and the other boys Who used to whoop things up? ——__<<+-—____ There 1s a speck of war in the republican party of Pennsylvania, growing out of the recent con- vention. It is openly charged by delegates that Boss Magee pledged himself to Passmore for treas- urer and then “betrayed him.” ——___<e>—____ The New York Times presidential researches show that President arthur has been making Steady progress In the confidencg and good opinion Of the people. If he keeps on at this rate he will loom up formidably next year for the succession. —_—__—§_<ee—__ In the re-election of State Senator Cooper as chat of the republican state committee of Penpsylvania, the stalwarts seem somenow to have retained their grip upon the party machin- ery.
