K. Elwards, one of the official reporters ef tho House of Representatives, in the death by drowning in the river Delaware of the second son, Keith, a bright youth of nineteen. He was a student at Buriington Military College, N. J., and Was expected home on Saturday at the termina- tion of the school year. ‘The college commence- ment was to have been on Friday. On Thursday afterncon, with three other students, he obtained permission to go out for a row, and getting a boat about two o'clock they went up the river to the Island. After rowing about a while one of them proposed, as they were hot with rowing, to " take a “wash-off. ‘Two of the youths remained near the shore. Keith an: one of hts compantous, Ed. Rogers, waded out about a quarter of a mile to deep water, until they ‘were about neck deep, When they started to swim tothe shore, but on cominencihg to swim they found themselves In a whirlpool formed by the meeting of two currents below the fsian4, from Which, aithough both were pretty good switnmers, they could not ¢xtricate Memselves. Kelth was the first to lose strength, and culled out: “Rogers, I think I cannot stand this much longer.” Rogers swam toward hita, and bad just touched him and tried to shove hii towerd shore to get a foot-hold on the sind, when a tug-boat passed and the swetl struck them With such ¥iolencé as to have astrans- lng effect on bot, and at the same time sepa ting them. Rogers, a3 soon 48 he could recover himself, approached his companion again, but found lim with his head fallen forward, app: rently senseless. He made desperate cfforts to a% sis’ Lim, but found his own strength rapidiy fall- ing. He tried to call to his companions at the shore, but could not command volce enough, At last he cbia.ned a foothold and got to shore. Efforts were atonce made to recover the body of Edwards A number of boats went out with boys from the collge, townspeople, fishermen, &c., but It was not tll one o'clock a.m. that the body was found, being recovered by the fishermen with Elwards arrh t Burlington early norning and brought the rematns back hingtop. Keith was a untyersal favorite among his friends, both In this city and at Bur- lington. He had gained the first priz? for declama- tion and a prize for Greek that would have been S*deliverel to him at the college commencement, which was given up on account of the sad occur- rence. Much sympathy fs felt with Mr, Elwards and his family ander this most affifetive bereave- ment. The funeral took place yesterday after. roon from bts residenes at Anacdstia, across the Eastern Branch, to St. Barnabas’ chureh, Prince George’s county, und was largely attended.
