Mr. James Coleman appeared as coun- sel for Mr. Murch, and Mr. John L. ‘Thomas repre- sented Architect. Hill. Mr. Murch and Mr. Hull Were both present. Mr. Coleman satd he desired to put in evidence all papers bearing upon what 1s Known as the 15 per cent contract. Mr. Biatr, of the Dapartment of Justios, objected to the intreduction of the e on ti cround that the first contract with the Dix Island Granite Co;mpany was made by Lil's predecessor in office, Mr. Mullett, and consequ@ntiy bad no bear- ing upon this Investigatio Mr. Coleman said tt was evident that Mr. Blatr end himself could not act in harmony in thts tn vestigation, and asked that the letier of Mr. | Murch requesting the apnolntm nt of government counsel to assist him, upon waich Mr. Blair was det led, be withdrawn. Chatrman New sald that tn order to proceed to business the committee would let Mr. Blair's ob- Jection go over for the present. ‘This was satistac- tory to all concerned, and Mr. Colemin then of- fered In evidence a con(ract_ made tn 1883 between ex-Supervising Architect Mullett and the Dx Isiand Granite Co. for furnishing stone for the New York post office. WHAT MR, MURCH PROPOSES TO SHOW. Mr. Coleman satd he proposed to show that this contract entitled the contractor to 13 par cent Pproftt, but that the latter, with the knowledge of Mr. Hill, who was then assistant supervising architect, tncreased the figures, and that new contracts were made with this. company without advertising for proposals. Other contracts with the same company for work on the St Louls, Boston and other public butldings were also of- fered in evidence. Mr. Coleman sid he would also offer in evidence the regular weekly reports of the superintendents in charge of the construc- Uon of these buildings, Requisitions had been made for them several weeks ago, but they have not yet been furnished. Mr. Thomas replied that the reports would be forthcoming in a few days. PROPOSED APPOINTMENT OF EXPERTS. Mr. Coleman then proposed that the committee issue subpasnas for the appearance of certain wit- esses, and that two experts be appointed, one to be designated by the committee and the other by the prosecution, to Investigate the alleged traudu- lent granite contracts. He thought it could be shown that the government had paid hundreds of thousands of dollars more than Uie stone was Worth at the highest market rates, and that work Was paid for which was never performed. Mr. Thomas objected to the appointment of experts, and the question Was taken unJer con- sideration by the committee. After deliberation, Mr. New stated that as Mr. Stelnmetz was already acting as an expert 1a this matter on behalf of Mr. Murch there would be no diMeuity in selecting another expert to represent the supervising architect. ADJOURNMENT TILL NEXT WEEK. Mr. Coleman then asked for an adjournment till Tuesday next in order to allow the experts time to examine the papers bearing on the contracts in question. Mr. New said that the committee would consent to this arrangement so far as Mr. Murch’s inter- ests were concerned, but would meet on Monday next to hear evidence on the charges preferred by Poulson & of Brooklyn, and Manly, Cooper &Co., of Philadelphia, whose witnesses’ are now im the city awaiting examination, ‘The committee then adjourned till Monday next.
